lately, it's been my '90 peavey foundation. with low action, light guage rounds and that skinny neck, it's very easy to play. and those super ferrites sound pretty good too.

I'm going with my early Foundations for fave cheap bass vote. The only Peavey bass I really like, and they happen to be a bargain at under $200 for a nice one. All good.
have one of these myself with a hipshot drop-d . . . probably going to put it up for sale in favor of a squire p or j though!

My Dano Longhorn from 2009 is right up there. I've had some cheap basses now! Most I've had to mod or repair, which took the edge off how little I spent, but the Dano is stock except for drilling a hole at the end of the top horn for a Straplok button. Been a total champ since I got it, too. Paid $190 new.
Last labor day i bought a new mij custom 70s sunburst precision from sam ash for $680. Its still my favorite bass. I've been playing fender basses since the late 60s.
While shopping at a closeout/bargain store (Building 19) about 15 years ago, I found some items they got from a pawn shop that had gone out of business. Most of it was the usual trash: broken music stands, harmonica straps and maracas with palm trees painted on them. There was a black Hohner fretless PJ with a gold spray painted pickguard and one purple strat knob. The price tag said $205, but the sign above that said 50% off. There was no way to plug it in or test it, but the neck and body looked really good and most of the other stuff was intact, so the parts alone were worth the $102.50 it cost, even if the electronics weren't working. I got it home, plugged it in and almost fell out of my chair. Talk about tone!!!
Esp ltd b50fm. Beautiful instrument. I haven't had to have anything done to it. In fact, I am afraid of upgrading it for fear of it losing its tone.

I bought a Squier Vintage Modified Jaguar Bass ($199) for my daughter. It is actually a surprsingly nice sounding and feeling bass.

There were 3 at the store and the consistency were not impressive though. They were extremely different in both weight, sound and feel. The best sounding one was quite heavy - especially for a short scale bass - and given it was for a kid, I went for one of the lighter ones.
But still, for the money it´s a nice bass.

They don't get much cheaper than this, in either build quality or price. And they don't get much better sounding or playing than this either.
