Your favorite bass, ever?

I don't really have a favorite bass, but I do have a favorite neck that has been part of some of my favorite basses. It's a 1988 Warmoth neck I had made for a double P I built. The best sounding, playing, looking bass I've owned is my Sadowsky RV5 Jazz. As basses go it's not that heavy, but due to my back issues it's just moved to the wrong side of comfortable for a gig! I play it when I can perch on a stool, but on a standing gig I have to break out my backup, a Mike Lull PJ5. The second best bass I've owned.

My weirdo Ecuadorean-made 33" scale FSO Jazz fretless. It was far from perfect on delivery and took a few different mods to get it to really blossom, but it is absolutely home for me now. I keep thinking about getting another bass (and did get a Ibby Mezzo fiver, which now languishes), but I really can't imagine anything else feeling as good as this one. I typically play sitting down, which makes its weight a non-issue (mahogany body, maple neck, ebony fingerboard - over 11 lbs), I love how it looks, and the neck is ideal for me ('66 Fender Jazz spec).

I'm most attached to my 2003 Fender J, which has Lindy Fralin Split-Jazz pickups and an aftermarket Fender Black Sparkle pickguard. I bought it new, and it's always delivered, whether for auditions, recording, or shows. The tone and playability are outstanding, and it's extremely resonant. Just a great example of the breed. It hasn't always been my #1 for gigs, and I play my fives more often these days, but it's still my favorite and will be with me for the duration.

I'm looking for my first 5 and this is at the top of the list. I already own two other Sires. What's your take on the B string (feel, floppiness, tone), and why did you choose this bass?

The B on the Sire is just fine . Very usable , not floppy at all at least not mine . You can play runs using the B string and it blends with the other strings very well . The pickups I changed to and the bridge had no effect on the B string sound , it worked great stock .

Thank you, this helps a lot. My D-5 is one of the best playing basses I've ever owned. I also have a Sire "Tele" guitar and the necks on each are just great.

I have Nordstrand NJ5S pickups and a 4-band Audere Z-mode preamp in a parts Jazz bass and they’re a killer combination. The only reason I don’t have the passive option is because the luthier who suggested Audere said I’d literally never use it. Don’t how right he was but I never wished I had it. It’s nice and transparent so you hear all the great vintage tone of the Nordstrand’s.

I have a Sire V5R as well and love it. It punches way above its purchase price. :bassist:
