Your favorite fuzz/disto under $100.

I've played a few and haven't found my love yet. Big Muff, Boss HM2, DS1, ODB3, Creepyface, Keeley/ProCo Rat, MXR Distortion+... I'm currently playing a Boss DS1 but I split my signal and send the unaffected side to one channel and the affected side to the other to maintain bottom. I still can't get that mix between definition and deep, ballsy fuzz that I'm looking for. IME, playing fast with bass fuzz = mud. I'm looking for a pedal that is the exception to that rule but I don't want to spend a ton of money.

IMO there are NO EXCEPTIONS to the "bass played fast through fuzz = mud" rule. Don't get me wrong, I loooovvvvee fuzz. But I accept the limitations inherent to what a fuzz is and does to the signal. I have owned many fuzzes, both cheap and boutique, so price, rarity, and quality are not factors in my opinion of their muddy nature.

If you want a cheap fuzz that cuts like crazy, check out the Devi Ever Cherry Pop. Still muddy when you play fast, but it is intense and cutting anyway.

Fuzz Hugger Velcroar and Arc Flash.

Personally I find just bout any muff variant to give you mud when playing fast, maybe one with some control over the mids might help but it all depends on what you are playing and what sound you are after.

I could list a few more but I don't get the idea you would like fuzzes with sputtery or chewy attack.

I think you would do well with a pedal with a blend but I also think you might have to go a little higher then $100.

Yeah, but those are discontinued

what about gated fuzz? not always what folks use it for, but it works

Yeah, I was thinking this too. Only examples I can think of are over 100 buckos, though. Maybe you could get some approximation of this by just getting a muddy fuzz and putting a seperate gate before it?

I say before btw, because it seems that to put it after would not really work due to the compression inherent in fuzz. But what the frack, before might not work either. And besides, isn't experimenting with effects half the fun of them? Or, like, 98% of the fun of them? :D

Also: Aaah! Eric! A different sig? HOW CAN YOU DO THIS TO ME!? Don't you want to roar anymoar? :crying:

That's great if you play with lots of rests between notes, but if you are "playing fast" with very few/short rests, then a gated fuzz is just a long stream of continuous fuzz like any other.

Again though Devi Ever makes some great fuzzes for under $100. The VFM is gated, and with the tone-pot mod I gave it, it was a thunder machine. The Cherry Pop already has that tone pot mod.
