I do indeed get your drift. It's all over me. All the really old school guys had lame solos, or something like that. I thought somebody had to stand up for poor Arvell. But, it is kinda true, so....

Charlie Haden's intro and solo on Ornette's "Law Years" (off of Science Fiction, I think 1971) is excellent, especially the transition at the end.

Dave Holland and McBride trading(!?) on the Coltrane Tribute thing on YouTube. Great manifestation of the Doublebass vocabulary in a duet format...
The instrument, beyond it's "role" is entirely capable of it's own soundscapes. Please check out Link Removed for a decent example of the bass as a primary provider of music, not just bass lines...
