I've always been a fan of X-Men over anything else.
Magneto, although not a hero in the traditional sense, would likely be my favourite if I was forced to choose.

Yeah, I had a pretty extensive collection myself. Not as big as what you're describing there, but it was enough that I sold them when I was 16 and bought myself a car. I had all the X-Men. They were my most high value comics (1-224?) I can't remember exactly, around the time Mr. Sinister was introduced, I lost interest.
Interestingly, My 2nd favorite after Captain America was Thunderbird from the X-men. He was in Giant Sized X-Men 1 and was killed off in X-Men 95. (Giant Size 1, X-men 94 and 95). Only three issues and was still awesome.
I've always had two super heroes i've held in high regard. My mom and dad.

Oh yeah I remember him.. Warpath's brother.. I read the X-Men when Kirby was still drawing them.. and for me to this day Neal Adams was one of my all time favorite X-Men illustrators.. I liked the Claremont period in X-Men history.. He was pivotal having created a lot of the characters we see today.. I don't remember if he created Wolverine or not but I know that his depiction of him is the one that we have all come to know.
I also dug the Atom in DC.. I forgot about him.. I thought that whole size to mass thing was interesting..
Len Wein created Wolverine for The Hulk (issue 181). If you want to get really technical, issue 180 was the real "first appearance" of Wolverine. It was just one panel at the end. 181 was his first full appearance..

I started to post a photo of Lynda Carter in full regalia, but it's too provocative for TB.
Once you've seen Lynda in the WW outfit, I think you can understand why.
