Harry Babasin, Neil Stubenhaus, Dug Pinnick (though not "unknown", he rarely gets the credit he deserves).
Seriously you guys, take a moment and listen to Flood the Desert. No BS they are the real deal and Zach Flora is one of the best that I have ever seen anywhere.
Well if you mean just originals players, Then maybe some of you have heard of him but Lars "Leari" Ljungberg of The Ark has to be my favourite.

YES! The guy had chops and an awesome sound! Loved his playing, it was a very VERY sad day when he passed away, RIP Rob!

Mark Ibold from Pavement & Sonic Youth. When you play with Malkmus, Ranaldo, Moore and Kim Gordon its easy to get overlooked. But the guy is rock solid and deserves more credit.

Dunno if one can consider the bassist in Duff McKagen`s side band "unknown", but his name is Jeff Rouse. One of the best rock bassists you never heard of, imo. MONSTER tone, tasty lines ! Also, I went to college with a guy named Chris Dickerson, who went on to be in Virgos Merlot. He played in a local single-guitar band and smoked ! In Virgos, though, he was buried in a three-guitar sludge and wasn`t as prominent.
