Your first bass love?

My first bass love was in 1979/1980 when my drummer brother allowed me to come along to his pub band’s practice to watch. The bass player had a Jetglo Ricky 4001 and I fell in love with the look and the sound. That was what made me want to play bass. I still love the look and sound of Rickys - sadly that’s all I love. I first actually tried one about a decade later. Hated the feel of the neck and how it sat against the body.

Two or three years of constant parent pestering later and my parents bought me an Aria SB700 for my 18th birthday. I loved that bass... here’s me playing it around 1989 or thereabouts.

Mind you, I still love it. Here’s me getting ready to play it two weeks ago! Never selling that bass!

I was a Ventures fan in the early 60's and my parents were somehow able to find a Ventures Model bass in a store 60 miles from where we lived. I can still remember seeing it hanging on the wall when we walked into the store. It was the only bass that I played from 1965 until the early 90's. I still have it and will never part with it.

When i started playing in the early 70’s, my first 2 basses were a nice Hofner solid body that was too small for me,and a not so nice 70’s Fender Precision that felt like a heavy dead fish. Then i got this 72 4000 and knew it was what i wanted out of an instrument. I didn’t get to keep it for long,but i have always owned a Rick bass since then.(i have 6 now).
