It was 1985, I was in college and was our lead singer and rhythm guitarist, and we were playing a dance marathon fund raiser in our campus cafeteria.
Our bass player decided a few days earlier that since HE was the one with seriously spiky hair HE should be the one to sing Billy Idol's "Dancin' With Myself". I said no problem if I get to play bass - in other words, borrow his Ric. So our lead guitar player covered the guitar by himself, I got my first taste of bass, and our bass player got his lead singer jollies.
It could have been a disaster. The power went out in the cafeteria during that song and without missing a beat our drummer improvised a solo that actually kept people dancing. It took about 10 minutes for faciities to find and reset the breaker and when they did our drummer gave us a cue and we picked up right where we left off. We, mostly he, got a huge round of applause for that. We played one more song but he was so tired we ended our set early and had the DJ take over while we tore down and the next band set up.
I didn't play bass again until I bought my first one about 15 years later but now I'm hooked. I haven't played any of my six strings for more than about 10 minutes since then.
