Your first bass

My first was a MIJ remake of a 51 precision. I paid $99 for it over 30 years ago.
I got lucky, it's actually a nice playing and sounding bass. It been through quite a lot over the years, multiple pickups, varioue routs and other operations. Last year I put a reissue 51 pickup in it and a set of flats on it, rewired it and it kicks.

A ibanez GSR200FM in blueburst that I got 2 years ago, still have it....its great, It will probably be getting even less play time now that Im building a bass.
My first bass was a used, late 1960's Mosrite Celebrity Bass that I bought from my bass instructor. I think I paid $300.00 for it.

I bought my first bass in 1970-something when I was thirteen or fourteen years old; a minty used Ric 4001 Mapleglow with checkerboard binding and those odd bent cloverleaf Grovers. I sold it over twenty five years ago for next to nothing (the same thing I paid). Sure wish I had it now, if only to sell it for $2500 on eBay, since I have absolutely no use for a four-string.
Still have the bass and it's currently in storage until I return to CONUS.
Every time I pick 'er up, she still has that magic. So MANY hours of playing and cutting my teeth on that sucker...I try to record at least 1 song whenever I release a CD...

It was an Applause GTX P Bass copy. purchased at a Walnut Creek music store in December of 1989.
The poor thing.
years ago I chopped the upper and lower horns off, modded the headstock (yeah, I didn't know what the F I was doing), painted it, pulled the frets out and filled with wood putty. I don't even remember what else I did to it.
But I still have it and it still works. It sits in my office at work and rarely gets played. Occasionally, I grab it and play it for a minute. I guess the last time I played it was when I got a new small practice amp - a couple of weeks ago.

My first bass was a 1977 Rick 4001; black with white pickguard...just like Geddy who was my hero at the time (along with Chris Squire). got it for $350 used and had it for about 2 years. Got screwed trading it in at Ed's used guitars in Miami for a fretless Jazz but I was young and thought that I had to have a fretless. Oh well...
My first bass wasn't.
Wasn't a bass I mean. I met a drummer and guitarist who needed a bass player and though I didn;t know a bass lick to save my life, I agreed to join the band.
We couldn't find one in the village I lived in so we borrowed a Harmony Meteor electric guitar, took the high E and B strings off, turned all the tone control to "Bass" and did the same with the Silvertone amp we borrowed and the guitarist showed me bass licks.
My wife gave me my first real bass for Valentine's day 1976, a fretless Raven; a Japanese copy of a Fender jazz with little humbucking pickups in it.
Funny thing, she got pregnant that night.
Our daughter will be 31 in November.

My first bass was a Charvel/Jackson neck thru that I modded with EMG's, Badass bridge and refinished it. Like an idiot, I sold it. Played awesome, was just very heavy. Would do anything to have it back!
Alvarez 6 string bass with EMG passive pick ups. Yes, my first was a 6...didn't know any better at the time. I thought more meant better...more means harder to play...Traded it in to GC, was gone within a week...Still miss it...I have been looking for a 5 string Alvarez with a translucent black quilted black to mod, but no luck...

Mine was an Fender American Standard 5-string Jazz, rosewood fretboard and metallic red finish. I sold it about 5 years ago when I was getting $ together to buy a used Spector NS-5 from a buddy. I wasn't even a bassist, really, then (guitarist). I didn't officially switch to bass until four years ago, and I sold that Spector to buy my first bass amp (Fender BXR-100), a used Ibanez fiver, and a cargo trailer.
