Your Most Expensive Bass?

Not trying to create any sort of bragging thread. My fiancee think's it's absolutely insane to spend close to $2,800 on the bass I want (5 string Valenti), and I'm generally curious to see what others have spent on their high end basses.

My current most expensive bass is a Classic Stingray 4. Retails new around $2,000.. I got it used for $1,220.

My sister has a taste for really high-end fashion, where a purse costs way more than $1,000. A leather bag that is stitched together and has metal zippers, buttons and doo-dad's. You could get a similar size leather purse for under $50, but it doesn't have the name Chanel or whatever on it. The matching wallet is almost the same price, but with less leather. That's over $2,000 for a purse and wallet. That's insane.

I had a custom bass made for about $700 including shipping with Chinese electronics and some hardware I provided. It's a sub-short scale (22"). Good deal for me.

Tell her to be glad you're not a symphony player. Many play instruments that start in the tens of thousands and run to the hundreds of thousands of dollars. No joke. They make paltry salaries and yet spend more than they make in a few years on an instrument.

Google the international society of bassists site $5-$185K or the uptown basses site for prices ranging from $5K-$115K

Show your wife what working classical bassists pay for their instruments for a reality check.

Please be careful.. I'm not trying to tell you your business but my EX -wife (last December) started to tell me what I could and could not buy. However when she wanted something..money was never a problem.... That is just ONE of many reasons she's my ex...

BTW My most expensive bass is my Geddy Lee Jazz..I'm sure it is alot cheaper than some here on T.B.

US $3000 for a custom Sandberg. Best money I ever spent, and it's so good that I will never need to spend money like that ever again. Other (cheaper) basses may come and go, but my Sandberg is a keeper.

i don't have any expensive basses - currently the one that would sell new for the most is an ibanez SR500. that being said, serious photography enthusiasts pay easily over $3500 for a decent camera and lenses, and well over that for a good camera and high quality lenses. guys who rebuild cars can easily spend tens of thousands on their hobbies, and do-it-yourselfers need good quality tools that will also cost more than your bass.

i don't know how your fiance grew up or what her interests cost, but i see a lot of women and some men who do their best to convince, bully, pressure or otherwise talk the musicians in their lives into giving up their musical expenses. the way i see it, if you can afford your regular expenses, and the money you spend is your own, i don't believe significant others should get a say in how it's spent. more important, i can't see why they WANT a say in it. your hobbies, interests and passions are a part of you, and IMO they should support that in the same way you would support theirs. my husband is always stoked to get me or help me figure out the latest piece of gear (he paid for half my SR500 and drove me to 3 guitar centers and 2 sam ash stores last weekend) and i was happy to help him get his new jackson V a few weeks ago, as well as paying for all or part of his 8 string guitar and 5 string bass.

I bought a GB Rumour five string from the TB classifieds a year or so back. If I ordered one of similar spec today it would cost me around $5000. I paid roughly half that.

However, it may not be my most expensive bass. I paid (I think) about £175 for my 1973 Rick back in 1976. That would be the equivalent of around £1200 ($1900) in today's money, but I have seen vintage Ricks from the same month and year advertised in dealers for up to around £3500 ($5500). Whether or not mine is worth that much is a moot point because it is most definitely not for sale.

Huh? When I'm in someone's house that's really nice and obviously expensive, I wouldn't dare ask how much they paid for it. Asking people what's the most they've spent on a bass seems like a personal question. My answer is look at the entire inventory of basses in every store, and I think you can assume that there's someone out there who has purchased the most expensive model they sell.

My most expensive is my MIA Jazz, an '08 bought new in '09 for almost 1200 bucks. My favorite bass to play however is my '10 Squier VM P I bought new it about 280 bucks. Go figure. The Jazz is most definitely the best of those two, it's just that I'm more of a Precision guy, and it really is a great bass.

All three of my basses are used, and the most expensive one cost me $875. I know eventually in the future I'd like to get an instrument that's in the $3-5k price range, just to get a taste for that kind of money can get me.

Really I'm of a similar opinion to lots of others here. When put in comparison to many other hobbies a $3-5k bass isn't all that crazy, if you can afford it. I'd also say if you're willing to gig with the bass chances are you can make back that money as well, which not all expensive hobbies can claim.

It's all about perspective. If the bass brings happiness to your life for the next 8 years, then you've spent less than $1 per day to be happy and you still have the bass as an asset to enjoy for many years more or sell as you see fit. What is insane about that? If you were to spend $1 per day for the same time period on a cup of coffee, you might enjoy the coffee, briefly, but you'd have nothing to show for it other than many, many gallons of urine.

Actually, you should buy a more expensive bass.

On the subject of expensive basses, I found something that made me giggle.

Now when I'm out and about, I want something to keep my bass safe and secure. I liked the look of this:
