Your pick for best PJ under $1000

I’ll have to look at a Godin bass too. I cannot buy something online I have to play it and feel the actual instrument I’m getting first. I see on the website they come in just over $1000.

I would love to say SB-2 as I feel that's a particularly underrated instrument, but I wouldn't advocate the Tribute model, and I would have to add that it is a somewhat peripheral take on the P/J sound. My choice, as appears here several times, would be the Yamaha BB434 or 734 depending on your electronics preference. I've played these back to back with USA G&L and felt they were more in line with one another from a fit and finish standpoint. If you had room to stretch, I'd say a BBP34, all day, and I'm a Fender guy, so you heard nothing. But hey, realistically, you could get a main and backup BB434 for your grand and never have to think about buying another bass. Okay, well, maybe that's not at all realistic....

I got this Fender Special Edition Deluxe PJ Bass whilst visiting Canada about 4 years ago. Wasn't looking specifically for a PJ bass but when I played it it felt just right. It's passive where as the norm for PJ's often seems to be active but the tonal possibilities with it surprised me and it has a lovely 70's Jazz neck with a Precision body. Don't recall exactly how much I spent but for sure it was below 1000 dollars and worth every penny I paid for it.

If you can find a nice, used German Warwick Fortress One I would go for that. The string spacing can be set around 18mm, I’m not sure if it goes out to 19mm. The neck is a little thicker front to back but the fretboard radius makes it very easy to play. The MEC pickups provide a nice range of tones. The body is very comfortable and is well-balanced. My band mates love the sound.

Had a red ‘83 made in Japan Destroyer, Great sound , white original Di marzio,s . Sold it after a couple of years and made a profit just did not use it. A little uncomfortable to balance ...but I can still hear it. Brings out the beast in ya. Then sold my Aria P bass and bought a VM jazz but didn’t have enough of what I wanted to hear .so I bought a SX P/J about 3 months ago $ 300 AUD, it’s now one of two main gig basses. (The other a Charvel Surfcaster my avatar ). Now I’m happy again.

Play it before you buy. I tried one with expectations. Disappointed was my experience.

Absolutely Sire. I have a 5 string V7 of theirs and its build quality is astounding. Awesome neck, coming from my other basses it felt like training weights were taken off, if that makes sense, it is just effortless to play. The preamp sounds great too, even just run flat it adds a lot to the sound. Their P7 I think has a jazz neck on it, but I haven't really played their 4 strings. I assume they play great as well, and there are always some pretty awesome deals for new ones at Thomann if you can deal with the long shipping time

If you subscribe to their newsletter, they usually have B Stock basses (basses have one or two minor cosmetic defects), for under $1k and still have the full warranty. I've bought a few B stock Laklands and have yet to see the blemishes.

I really like how these Lakland basses.. except for the bridge. I HATE the bridge. It's honestly the only reason I've never owned a Lakland. I wonder, is there an aftermarket replacement that fits?
