That recording (1975?) was the first I heard of Rush and it blew my mind - I'd never heard bass & drums like that before. It's still right up there as one of the most butt kicking hard driving rock recordings I can think of.

Well being a Canadian, yes, I have that one. Stupid Ricky... Not a huge fan of Trailer Park Boys, too white trash for me. No offense to anyone intended, it's just the show.

10 songs? ONLY 10 songs? :p

Okay... In no particular order:

1. Cygnus X-1
My first love was Cygnus X-1. It's the first bass line I ever learned and I've never stopped loving that song.

2. Cygnus X-1 Book II: Hemispheres
After I got AFTK I realized that Hemispheres (album) had a continuation of Cygnus X-1 and I had to have it. When I popped it in, I was greeted by the greatest chord I had ever heard and for the next 18 minutes I was amazed.

3. La Villa Strangiato
Hemispheres is my favorite album. This instrumental is probably my favorite instrumental by Rush also.

4. Red Barchetta
Something about this song just resonates with me. The great bass parts and my love of going on jaunts through the country in my car seems to combine well.

5. By-Tor and the Snow Dog
This is just such a goofy and fun song. It's also great to rip up on bass. The Exit... Stage Left DVD version is the best I've seen or heard due to Geddy's bass riffs and tone.

6. 2112
The mainstay of Rush epics. I was introduced to this album right after I was introduced to Moving Pictures and fell in love with the old stuff. Also, 2112 introduced me to Ayn Rand... after reading Anthem and the first chapter of Atlas Shrugged I really don't see what all the fuss is about. I'll stick to Rush, thanks :p

7. Garden Road
Kind of an off the wall song to list, as it's never appeared on an album and has only been heard once. But it absolutely defines how Rock-n-Roll Rush could be back in '74. I learned this song on bass after cleaning up the mess left by my melted face from hearing it for the first time. I think this is a more rockin' song that Finding My Way, Anthem, Working Man, or anything from their earliest albums.

8. Digital Man
Such a fun little song for bass. I was pleased to hear this played on the last tour.

9. One Little Victory
I was deciding between this and Secret Touch, but I went with this. After the Rush Drought after Different Stages I wasn't sure if I'd ever hear them again. Then in '02 they released Vapor Trails and this song blasted me to the back of my chair when I first pressed play. It is THE song for the new age of Rush and tells the listener that "Rush is back in force."

10. The Necromancer
A somewhat campy epic from their formative years that I really like. The beginning is eerie and dark, the middle is absolutely rockin' and so much fun to play on bass, and the ending is nice and grooving and it almost reminds me of Baba O'Reilly.

I can't disagree with that, it certainly is. However there's something about watching Alex Lifeson being bound and gagged and thrown into the back of a trunk to appease an over the top Rush fan that is just... priceless.

#1. Tie Between Red Barchetta and Xanadu - two classics; couldn't choose between one or the other.

#2. Subdivisions - A truly kick-awesome song.

#3. Natural Science - Epic and Catchy.

#4. 2112 - Finest Rush epic, It never gets old.

#5. Circumstances - Quite possibly the heaviest lyrics in Rush history.

#6. A Farewell To Kings - Overall favorite Rush bass line.

#7. La Villa Strangiato - A Musical Nightmare: and a good one at that!

#8. Freewill - Truly awesome song, Fantastic guitar solo.

#9. YYZ - One hell of a chop-tastic bassgasm.

#10. By-Tor And The Snow Dog - Wins the award for silliest Rush song title, but awesome none the less.

As you can tell, I'm more of a fan of Rushes Proggy period. :bassist:

Every period is awesome though. :D
