Your thoughts on a new bass

Hi everyone, I curently play on a fender P-bass and am looking to buy a second bass. I recently tried a gibson EB bass and a warwick corvette at the store and i really liked both, kinda liked the warwicks tone a little more while i felt like the gibson felt a bit better in my hands.

Well long story short I was wondering if anyone tried/own one of these basses and your feedback on them, and also if you have any other suggestions on other basses around that price (a bit over $1000).

I'm not sure what kind of music you play...just taking a guess from your choices you play rock or metal, so I'll say this: the other day I was in a music store that had a few Epiphone Thunderbirds that seemed to have different wood combos and either a neck through or set neck design...made me wish I played metal..they were really nice looking and playing for about half of what your range seems to be...

Who says you have to play metal to play a Thunderbird? There was no such thing as metal music when that bass was first introduced. Don't limit yourself man.

Cort makes great basses although they are not a very well known or popular brand. The company makes many of the big name makers low end/over seas models. I've heard they produce models for Ibanez, Fender, G&L and Lakland. You could get their top of the line A4 or 5 in your price range or get yourself two of their mid range models. I'd recommend a B4, especially if you can find a 20th anniversary model, and an [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] Although I've never played one I've heard good things about the GB series also. This MF deal on the G&L M2000 GTS is pretty sweet. Also take a look at [This invalid link has been removed]

Yeah i've tried a t-bird at the store but idk, i just dont like the looks that much.. I mostly play rock as far as covers, but i play a lot of blues my guitar and drum playing friends, and a bit of jazz. I might go for a good old fender jazz... Oh decisions.

I have an EB and an Epiphone Thunderbird. I happen to like the way Thunderbirds look and like the way they hang once you figure them out. You don't like Thunderbirds and mine is modified pretty thoroughly, so there's not much to say about it in this context. The EB, on the other hand, takes a little while to completely explore. You can get sounds out of it that are very much like a Fender Jazz. My brother, a dedicated J player, tried mine and had a puzzled look on his face listening to it for a while, then suddenly had a look of complete recognition on his face when he found what he called a familiar sound. It does a lot of different things and it is far more versatile than I expected it to be. Mine is lightweight as a bonus. The set neck design means you can't swap out the neck if you don't like it, but it also means it resonates longer than bolt-on instruments. I haven't found any dead spots on the neck, either.

I have never played a Corvette. I may not have ever even seen one in person, so I can't compare the EB to one of those. I will say this though: If the EB felt good in your hands and you didn't fully explore all the sounds it can make, then you may find that it will make the same sounds as a Corvette if you twiddle the knobs enough.

They sound awesome and they feel awesome. I had a mint condition 2005 in black and maple that I sold cuz I needed the money at the time. It's a stingray so I'm sure you're familiar with the sound and they feel amazing. One of the best necks I've ever played. Plenty out there used for around a grand.

Right now in the classifieds on the first page alone there's a few Stingrays and Sterlings for under a grand. Damn fine basses.

If you're thinking of a second bass then I would say that it would make sense to get one that gives you something different to your current bass. I would pick one that you would be equally comfortable with, but is different in some way. I have 3 basses - Fender PJ, Yamaha fretless and an MM Stirling Ray 35 5 string. I can take any of them to pretty much any gig, but each one brings something different to the table that the others don't have.

If you can get them over there in the states try a sandberg Electra. They do a 'p' , J and now a MM version. They're a budget Far East made series from the German company Sandberg. I believe they're excellent. I have a German one and its an excellent instrument. Another one I know of is HumanBase roxy b4. High end German electronics and assembled in the states. I hear rave reviews of them.

Gibson SG, EBO or EB3 any day of the week.
