Will someone please school me?!

I play in an Eagles tribute band. I would like to post videos of us doing covers of Eagles' songs on my YouTube channel, etc. Everything I post gets blocked for copyright infringement. Am I doing something wrong? Do I have to include anything special? I've seen other videos posted.

What idiotic thing am I doing or not doing?

I have to laugh. All my band's videos are incomplete versions of songs, taken by drunk people with smartphones. Oddly enough, youtube doesn't seem to care about anything I post. Then again, we took our only Eagles tune, "Victim of Love," off our setlist three years ago...:D

I had my first vid cover flagged by YouTube. I made a bass cover of Porcupine Tree’s “Blackest Eyes” and according to them it was a copyright infringement from Warner Music Group/Rhino... for the Ramones “Rock n Roll High School.”

I couldn’t argue with AI like that.

Some groups and/or artists are more active in pursuing these things than others. Try finding a video of any Supertramp song on YouTube. The only versions are of Roger Hodgson solo, none of the actual band. Every time my old acoustic band played Give A Little Bit, we'd precede it with a (half-joking) disclaimer asking people not to tell Roger, so we wouldn't get sued and forced to stop.

YT is tightening up on copyright stuff. They let some people post covers for specific purposes, some have link to credit the original artist, and some have legit permission to do the covers. If you want to know exactly what YT allows and how to go about getting your covers posted, you'll need to read through their long lists of conditions and agreements on posting. No easy way out. It's just that simple.

YT has a technology that scans the audio of all the posted videos, and it can identify copyright songs even if it was recorded as background audio. I've had videos blocked because the opera music for the dance was copyright in another country.

To know exactly why you can't post copy right material, check out the YT information. Then you can figure out how to go about it their way.
