Zon basses - is everything OK ?

Maybe this a dumb question, but has anyone shared the existence of this thread with Zon? As someone who just put a deposit on an instrument and then saw this thread, I’ve been thinking about it, just to see what the response was. I can’t imagine they’d be thrilled with it if they are earnestly trying to do the right thing.

I’m right there with you, had I seen this thread in 2021, I would have maybe thought twice about putting a deposit down.

I wouldn't panic or despair yet, though I fully understand the pain and aggravation.
All but one of the original "didn't get my bass from Zon" folks on this thread have received their basses.
Now we have one of those originals left, and a couple more who ordered after the thread was started are in the "damn, I've been waiting for far too long" bucket.
But thus far it does look like Zon is still making and delivering basses, including to folks on this thread.
Also it does look like "waiting quietly and politely" hasn't been the best strategy, and the folks who got their basses mostly made a lot of noise and didn't give up on making contact.
Hoping everyone concerned gets their basses soon.

Well maybe if a group of us share this thread with them and threaten legal action if we don’t have completion by x date, that might scare up some action from them. Thoughts?

I’ve honestly done my best to work with them and be incredibly understanding and polite but all I get is vague replies, empty promises or radio silence from Martin Peters. And I think I am reaching my break point.

This might end up being a recipe for them to finish things quickly (haphazardly?) just to get them done. I'm sure they know of this thread by now and are working as the queue allows to get things done to avoid further bad press.

Remember that the covid pandemic, warehouse fire, and family death have set things years back as well.

I may feel differently if I get an instrument outside of what I wanted, but till then let's see. I don't like the idea of threatening legal action and personally would not want to be part of it.

6 years waiting, albeit with modifications to the original order. I own that.

What was the original quote for completion? 8 months? You should have had 9 basses delivered start to finish in that timeframe, according to the original quote. OK, custom builders are notoroiously behind schedule, let's generously call an 8 month build a 12 month build to account for "normal" business.

You should have had 6 basses delivered start to finish in that time frame. you are stilling waiting for 1. Your patience is admirable, if enabling im afraid. I dont blame anyone for feeling otherwise, and I would be looking to recoup my losses at this point. I cant afford to lose thousands of dollars, or worse, not know if I lost thousands of dollars, for years. If it's gone, you can know it and plan accordingly. the multi year dangling carrot of hope and misplaced optimism is something worse. IMO

Your viewpoint is absolutely reasonable and logical. My continued deference is part of the issue, I know. It just feels soooo close to the finish line.

Also, I've read (and reread) many of your reviews, which I have found to be helpful, thoughtful, and tempered. Thanks for your insights over the years.

Joe seems to be a nice caring guy. As far behind as he his I wonder if a few cancelled orders would be an actual relief for him.

The problem here would be delivering refunds.

Obviously I don't know what's going on at Zon, but a common reason for businesses to fall behind is insufficient cash flow. They collect more orders than they can deliver (possibly without knowing; wishful thinking?) because new cash is needed to pay expenses and acquire parts and materials for outstanding orders to be built. Really hard to play catch-up once that loop begins.

Please read this information, all sales are final, no refunds:

ZON Guitars

Oh right... there's that.

FWIW, ex-TBer Maidenbass was on the hook for two Zon orders that went past the two year mark. One was eventually delivered, but he got reimbursed for the second one via his valuable personal property insurance policy, which included coverage for overdue/undelivered high-dollar purchases. I doubt many have a policy like that (I don't), but it's worth mentioning (for future orders; kinda doubt it would work retroactively).

I’m confident that I got my bass because I followed up on every reason they gave me on why there were delays. When they said they were waiting for pickups, I wrote Bartolini and CC’d Joe and Martin. I also had a trip to San Francisco planned, and coordinated a that to coincide with the window of time that they said my bass would be done. Being diligent and leaving no stone unturned seemed to work for me. To be fair, when they said they were waiting on preamps, they actually were. I wish everyone on here luck!

Joe does see all the emails that go to the customer email. At least that is what he told me.

Best advice is to send a email requesting to talk directly to Joe and call their office number and leave a message with same request. This has worked for me. Once you speak with Joe he should be able to provide his direct email for further communication.

Best luck!
Thanks for sharing that, I appreciate it.

So far I haven’t heard a peep from Martin since May 1st, despite having sent 3 follow up emails so far, each reiterating my requests and concerns. What irritates me is I will ask certain things about the status of my bass in an email and he will ignore that in his response and only answer half my email, almost like it’s on purpose, probably because there haven’t been any developments.

That’s really frustrating. Sorry they’re giving you the runaround. That’s no way to treat customers.
