Zon sonus advice.. helllllpppp

Hiya, bit of an odd one this post. But a friend of mine wayyyy over in sweden, has decided to call it quits on the music biz cause of good old arthristis :(

He's offered me a pick of his stable before he decides to throw it all up for sale, and I've got my eye on a lovely looking Zon Sonus Custom 4. He had it custom built with a satin finished alder body/crotch walnut top w matching peghead, bart soaps and the poly 3 eq.

Now, why this is an odd one is that I've been down the zon road before and didn't have much luck, I traded up to a vintage early 90's sonus 4 at one point, with plain old high polish ash body, bart j style single coils, and the old 2 band eq. I had issues with it, simply because I found the weight distribution a bit off (bit of dive on the old ones maybe?) and the tone to be a bit sterile. I did really want to like it because the neck was rock solid and extremely responsive. I found it a bit odd considering I love warwicks and spectors and figured this was so closely specced it would be a done deal.. but it just didn't gel.

Now I know I'm probably approaching idiot status already, but is there anyone who has had some experience with the customs etc AND the older sonus models, and can give me a bit of advice, in terms of maybe the differences.. if it's worth making the jump for the newer (it was made in 2014) sonus custom.. In particular if the customs or the polyfusion 3 band eq's can handle multiple genre's. It might sound unreasonable but I don't like to carry around two or three basses to gigs and practices.. and I play a bit of everything from classic 60's-90's rock, to funk, to jazz, to metal etc.. I'm not looking for ultra modern, or ultra vintage but something that can kinda straddle the line. Alternatively I could opt for his 'slightly' dinged Alleva Coppolo RA5, but I'm prob not old school enough to handle that lol

Ok enough blah blah blah. On to the comments.

For your styles while cosmetically a different way of going about things, the AC can cover those pretty damn well

I use mine for most everything you just mentioned and haven't looked back

While both Zons, the two you are describing have significant differences - primarily ash vs. alder body, and single coil vs. dual coil pick-ups. I've never played an alder Zon so I can't comment on that. The single coils will have more of a jazz bass sound as you would imagine while the dual coils will be a bit fatter/more modern sounding. I never had any issue with balance on a Zon. Lightweight tuners perhaps?
