Zoom B3 As Preamp Part 2

Thanks for your recommendations so far. Keep them coming ! TB is always a good source of information.

I am mainly playing RnB/Soul/Funk in a 9-piece RnB cover band at moderate stage volumes. But I am also playing double bass and EUB in a traditional jazz trio. Therefore I don't need high stage volume but a high level of sound quality. As I plan to sell my MarkBass 121p to budget the active monitor money is not my major issue.

I will definetly check the the QSC K-12, EVM ZLX and JBL PRX 712. I haven't heard them before but all companies are known for good quality reliable equipment. I already tried Mackies DLM-12. Their (missing) size is really nice but their sound was a bit disappointing. The lack (deep) controlled low end and are noisier than I had expected.

Just because I am curious I will also check Behringers B812neo. I am reading much of controversies about them and better want to check them with my own ears.

Also on my list: db Opera 712dx, RCF HD 12-A and Yamahas DSR 112, which got many enthusiastic comments.

I would also like to check fEARless cabinets and Atomic Audio but they seem to be unavailable in Germany unfortunately.

There are several Germans who have build fEARful cabinets, and an authorized builder in the UK for the fEARless cabinets. If you want to pursue this, there is more information available at [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]

Yes, that combination of amp and cabinet should work and setup should be similar to the combination I use.

A DSP section on a power amp is not usually needed for duty as a bass rig, but having one will no doubt affect the purchase price.

Last year I bought my B3 used from a fellow TB'er. My main live use for it is at church and I am very happy with the results....and the soundman LOVES it!! There's three of us at church who play bass (we rotate weeks), but the other two players just plug straight into a direct box. I use the Gallien Krueger head model into the SVT cab model and the soundman says I give him the best and most workable sound.

I gotta tell you this. I really haven't messed around too much with the effects, but for one of the songs on Christmas Eve is used the "Mono Pitch" octave pedal. I played 4 string that night and the chorus sections of one song in particular really needed a certain "something." A certain depth was missing so I thought I'd see what the Mono Pitch was all about. Oh man!!!! I got it all set at home and when we played that song at the rehearsal the next day and when I turned that effect on and got those lower octaves going, the whole band turned to me with this "YEAH!!!" look on thier faces! The soundman said it just shook the walls!! Ha! Power! Pretty darned cool!

I've never tried my B3 thru my amp. I have a GK MB115 which doesn't have an effects loop, so offhand I don't know what kind of results I'd end up with. But who knows? It could be great!

Charlie - I have to give you a big thanks for your suggested 'P with pick rock patch' (SVT with BB Bass) - perfect for so much of what I play, and with a little tailoring it's also perfect for fingerstyle with my P and J pups in series.

5 songs tomorrow morning, 3 with some variation on that patch. The others being SVT with occasional chorus, and fliptop for a mellow 60s P sound with occasional 'Bottom B' for a boost.

It comes with the needed TRS cable. However, that one was too long for me and I bought a shorter one, i.e. a TRS patch cord with rectangular plugs, 55 cm (~22 inches) long. Make sure it is a TRS cable or your pedal degenerates into a mere switch (as controlled by page 2 in Total settings).

Out of curiosity today, I ran my B3 and power amp through a Yamaha S112V Club Series V speaker I had in my basement.

Aesthetically, I would never use this arrangement for gigging, but I have to say it sounded really nice as a "full-range" live option for smaller venues.

Interesting since I have an easy access to these cabs .

You have to put them on the floor for a good low end?

I am not used to the full range speakers.

I am so completely hooked on the B3/MS-60B cabinet sim tones that I now run them at 100% even when using my real bass cabinets.

To achieve this, the cabinets must have a very capable horn tweeter and one must also be prepared to compensate as necessary with the amp model's TREBLE param.

+1 on using full-range speakers when modeling. Using a modeling preamp into a PA-style power amp gives the best response. It avoids uneven response from amps and speakers with baked-in EQ. Just as you wouldn't want to run your bass through a clock radio because of the way it would limit your sound, the same applies to choice of amps and speakers when modeling.

So I'll try with my PA speakers set on the floor :)
I made a try once but with the speakers raised and it wasn't very bassy.

I didn't buy the zoom B3 at first for its sims but most for all the other effects.
Today, I finally only use it for the drives and sometimes the sims... It's funny how I changed my mind !

But I still have some problems to deal with the cab sims.
I am not able to find the frequencies to correct on my bg250 to use the cab sims on full.
Without the cab sims, even if I find the amp sims good sounding I feel the lack of high cut provided my most of the cab sims (sounds better for the drived tones, I find).

And the other thing which is really surprising to me is how scooped the cab sims are. So I guess I'm psychologically (good word ?) afraid by these mid scoops (stupid, isn't it ?).

So, Charlie, before, you were saying never using the cab sims with bass cabs. Now, you changed your mind.
How do you correct your tone to achieve good results ?
I know every amp and bass cab has his own tone.
But I know the bg250 preamp tone to be very flat. The cab... almost flat but not completly... but I'm not able to find the good correction... Maybe I should have ordered new ears for christmas :)
