Zoom B3 As Preamp

I'm placing my B3 order tomorrow, so I figure I'll put my $.02 in on the whole firmware topic- I think it's coming. If they did it for the G3 I bet they'd give the B3 a little update too. Either that, or I'm hopeful to have a 6 effect processor. Oh well.

If you have a rack compressor , it leaves you a spot on the B3 open for something else.
The compressors on the B3 are great, though!

+2

I scored a 3 Leaf PWNZOR just before the B3,so yeah it leaves me 2 spots to play with on the Zoom.I run the Comp first into the B3.Yet agree I could still have happily used the units own compressors.

to hear my long time drummer of 20+ years to tell me half way through a gig Sat night "that's the best sound you've ever had" is a huge heads up for the B3 as my pre amp with a tweaked SVT sim. I had to agree with him. Yes !!!!

Got the mono-bridge working at long last. Got everything rigged up with the B3 as the pre-amp. The sound was amazing! Best sound I have . Should have used the power amp set up 30 years ago but then there was no B3!

Hey CharlieC, my back and me are really getting close to pulling the trigger on an active loudspeaker bass rig. Have you found one that you have liked or pulled the trigger on yet? My only two concerns are: First, will I be more prone to feedback in a live situation? I play with two guitarist using pretty decent sized rigs. Sometimes my stage volume is louder than what I would like it to be. Secondly, if you have tried this arrangement, do you miss the air pressure on your back side? For the lack of a better term. I would imagine the tone is phenomenal, but can you "feel" the bass still? Just curious about your insights. Thanks.

Not that you asked me, but I can chime in with a pretty decent set up option that I have been using...

If you are running direct to the PA and/or FOH, you can get some pretty good mileage with an in-ear system. I'm running the B3 into either a Rolls PM351 or a Shure PSM200, then DI through to the house or PA. I get pretty good results with this set-up, and I don't really miss the feel of the air. Usually when it gets that loud, it's too loud. If I have to wear earplugs, then why not dial some of the sound back in? :)

Bonus is, all of my gear resides on a pedalboard that weighs less than my bass.

The tone and experience of the B3/MS-60B through any of the serious active speaker contenders is nothing short of phenomenal. Your on-stage and FOH sounds will be identical and you will love all the fringe benefits. You will no doubt feel the air move when standing next to the box (which must remain on the floor to achieve this.)

However, if you are in a power war with guitar stacks and a thundering drummer, you may need two actives to keep up and they are not cheap. Additionally, some may feel awkward without a real backline behind them on stage, but your aching back will not complain at all.

I highly-suggest that you try before you buy and keep your receipt should you find the change too severe in your actual band context, but prepare to be floored when you hear how good they sound with the B3!

Cheers!

I don't see any weight advantage to a powered enclosure vs a class d head and neo cab. I would love justify buying a QSC K12. I already have a Markbass F1 and Genz Benz Shuttle 9. I have a few neo cabs. I have recently gone the other way and started using heavier gear as my band has a trailer, but this band is coming to an end. I find wheeling a 75 lb Henry 8x8 into a gig and sliding it onto a stage is not much different than carrying a 42 lb neo 2x10.

It's all a matter of context, depending on how much help you have, the type of vehicle you drive, and the venues you work.

When it's 1:00am and I'm alone in an empty parking lot, a one-handed toss of my 34lb AudioKinesis Thunderchild 112 into the back seat of a subcompact is a LOT easier than dead-lifting 75lb over the back bumper of an SUV.

Ditto for crowded lots where you can't get the car door all the way open, venues with several flights of narrow, rickety stairs and no freight elevator, etc...

I do an IEM/DI pedal board with a TU-2, Rolls and JDI. Works great. I've never been an "air" guy. It fits on a Pedal Train Nano and I carry my Roscoe in the other hand. Simple, small and sounds great.

I rune the IEM cord up my bass cord. Works great. We use a Presonus Live board so we each have our own IEM mix that we control from our iPhone. Sweet set up.

Sweet set up for certain, but you've no room left on the Nano even for a Zoom MS-60B and all its gain-saturated, character-infused, tonal glory -- for those who like that sort of thing :D

Cheers!

Steve I believe if I had a 34lb audiokensis I would see tge advantage but it is still not self powered which is what I was adressing

Regardless of even the slightest weight savings, IMHO, the B3 and MS-60B are at their best when paired with a full-range box, with the QSC K12 being a fine example.

I have yet to find any bass cabinet that comes close to delivering the smooth, powerful, sonic sound stage of a top-shelf active speaker, and when combined with either above Zoom product, the results are spectacular.

Cheers!

Don't mean to thread hijack, but I need a quick hand with something. I can't get my B3 to update from V1.0 to V1.1. I've carefully followed everything in the pdf, but when i hold the two patch selectors and plug in the unit, it does not give me the "Ready For Version Update" screen. It just opens Edit&Share. Kinda stuck. Help!

First, confirm that the B3's POWER switch is set to OFF before connecting to the computer

While pressing/holding both PATCH SELECT buttons, connect the B3 to the computer using the USB cable and then the VERSION UPDATE screen should appear
