Zoom B3 As Preamp

It works! Had it in the practice going through two cabs. Both ampeg. Sounded great and lasted 3 hours. Only problem was feedback. It was slight but there. First tine I have had feedback from a bass rig. Is that something to watch for with a power amp? The volu

With your power amp now confirmed as functional, I believe the issue you experienced recently was due to thermal or other protective shutdown.

Please keep in mind that the lowest impedance your model amp can support in bridge mode is 4-ohms and ensure that none of its cooling vents/fans are obstructed.

I have not encountered feedback with any of my bass rigs and I would guess it has something to do with your instrument and/or equipment settings rather than the power amp.

Cheers!

Thanks for the quick reply. Will try another bass and see if the feedback continues. Think I will get a fan and stick it at the back if the amp. Don't know if it is a factor but Tokyo now is super hot with high humidity. I think in US terms over 100 and humidity over 80%.
I love this thread! Thanks

and make sure you have always a proper load at the amps outlet. This means proper speaker cabinets without any shortenings and cables and plugs ok. The volume levels don't matter if all is setup properly.

Hi guyz! First of all, thanks to CharlieC for this thread! In fact, I registered to TB because of it!

I'd like to purchase an active PA speaker to go with my B3 but I live in Mauritius Island which basically means no way to test anything before buying and huge shipping costs!

I basically set up for either an Alto TS or an EV ZLX! Would the Alto be fine or is there SOLID ground to save a little more for the ZLX? And secondly, would the 12's be ok or will it be a safer bet to go for 15 speakers? I will be using them for small to medium gigs. I basically play almost everything, funk, jazz, reggea, rock, and will go to FOH for larger gigs!

In fact I am pretty sure a QSC K12 would be THE dream but for the time being, it doesn't fit my budget! Maybe in one or two years!

Thanks and welcome!

I would match the B3 with the brand new EV ZLX series: the 15" if your budget allows else the 12"

Cheers!

Thanks Andreas will keep that in mind. All of the venues we play will have a speaker cab for use usually ampeg. Starting a small tour so it should be interesting. Will have spare bass head just in case things go pear shaped again! Thanks!

Sorry if this sounds stupid. When changes have been made to a Specific patch, Can you reset it back to default without a "Global" Reset?

Good news and bad news:

The bad news is that once any edits are made to a patch, either a preset patch or one you created, changes cannot be cancelled nor is there any "undo" button.

The good news is that if you backup your B3 patches using the free Edit&Share software, you can then restore any/all patches should the need arise.

My wish is that Zoom release a firmware update for the B3 that provides the ability to disable AutoSave and prevent accidental edits.

Cheers!

Thanks for the quick reply. They should pay you to travel around and train people on the Zoom Products. My Dilemma is my O/S. I am using Xubuntu and can't even upgrade the firmware AFIK.

Try using an emulator. AFAIK there exist several open source ones and if you are lucky, that may be all you need to get the free Edit&Share software running. Good luck!

Hmmm...some good tips in this thread, if you have the patience to pan through it to find those little grains of gold.

I'm a long term fan of modellers. I use the amp modelling (more than the effects on offer) to get a good core sound for every song, and I have used them since the first generation Bass Pods. I know that purists hold against them, but in a live situation I'll trade absolute accuracy for absolute practicality every time.

My long suffering Line 6 Bass Pod XT Live died a month or so ago and since we bass players have been abandoned by Line 6, I just got the Zoom to replace it. I've only had it a week and with life getting in the way I've only had an hour or two to play with it, so I'm still flicking through factory presets - some that I can build on, others that I have no interest in.

One thing that I think is a limitation from my point of view is the 3 button interface. I can see why Zoom did this, but with the Line 6 I had the patches for each song arranged in set list order and with a single prod the patch was changed, the name of the song came up on the display (so no need for a printed set list) and all the effects for that patch were ready to go.

With the Zoom, at the end of each song, I have to hold the left button until it flicks into patch mode, then hold the left button again until it goes back into 'home' mode for that patch to allow me to use the stomp switches for the patch effects....Not really a big deal, but just a bit clunkier than it needs to be...leaves me wishing for a couple of dedicated patch up, patch down stomp switches...

I had the great pleasure of playing outdoors this weekend at a water-front beach club with significant FOH reinforcement.

My bass tone from the B3's XLR was spectacular to say the least, with massive amounts of warm, gut-rumbling fire power under my fingers.

I cannot stress enough the power of Zoom's ZFX-IV amp and cabinet simulations when set properly, making for my best DI experience ever!
