Zoom B3 - First Look

Got mine from Sam Ash delivered on Saturday and I will say I like a lot of the effects and a couple amp models. The editing software is really easy and helpful in tailoring your sounds of the various amps and pedals. My only gripe is that you don't have a master level that can be used on the fly. You have to go into TOTAL button and adjust your levels.

Even though a amp takes up a spot on the pedal with all the various effects that are available you should be able to use two of them and tweek them enough to get the sound you want.

got the B3 last mth and took it out on tour in Indonesia last week. it works flawlessly, replace the M9 with the B3 and have a small board that fitted the B3 + G30.

i work around the patches and have 3 settings with every patches having the amp sim. 1 dirt, 1 clean + chorus and 1 synth stuff cos our keyboards cannot make it out on tour.

its mostly on patch setting so its always either goes up or down.

i used the amp sim cos the amp change from venue to venue sometimes SWR, sometimes ibanez, sometimes SVT. so the tech rider can plug in whatever and DI go to FOH and thus why the amp sim was great, was lucky all the venue got strong PA + subs so tone come out good.

it was great to pack the pedalboard light than the usually huge PT2 full of M9 + G30 + Dirt pedal+ looper +blender +tuner and weight a ton.

Download the manual on the samson site.. I saw the manual on mine and the mac driver is different than windows.

Here's the instruction from my manual..


Install the file "Sequel LE 2.mpkg" from the CD.

Open Applications>Utilities>Audio MIDI Set Up>Audio Devices and check whether "USB Audio CODEC" is selected as a default input/output.

If another item is selected select "Zoom G Series".

Launch Sequel LE and select Zoom G Series as default.

Notes:

Use a short USB cord.. Preferably 3 meters or less and if you have a long one use the adaptor to power the unit.

How is the B3 compared to the M9 in terms of effects quality?

Got mine last monday and I'm really impressed with it. I cant really tell the diference between my EHX big muff and the zoom's emulator, plus I really like the balance knob on the drive effects. The tuner is also great, faster and more accurate than my Tu300, so I'm gonna sell everything and use only the B3.
Next weekend I intend to record some clips of the main effects and emulators and post it online, so if you want something specific let me know.

Effects quality is on par with the M9. I like the sound of this unit better though. The filters are more usable, the distortions are decent, I really like the fuzz's, delays, and other modulation effects better than the M9. I like the interface on this better as well. The Octaver is pretty much useless on it's own from what I've seen. The M9's Octaver is head and shoulders above it in the respect.

Although there is a certain fuzz+Octave on the B3 that I found some use for.

About the Octaver, I already have an EBS for that, but I read someone got good results using the monopitch effect on the B3 set one octave below.. you might try that!
Anyway, this is not the first time I read no love for the B3's octaver. The same for its synths.
