ZOOM H1 [COLOR="Red"]Help[/COLOR]!

I've been using a mini disc player to record sessions, reharsals and performance of the (primarily) acoustic jazz groups I play with and that's been fine. But we have a Mac at home and Sony don't like it some Apple.
So I got an H1 and it's nice and easy to record (just push one button) and the sound is pretty happening.

BUT the only manual you get with the sucker is a "quick guide" (and that seems to be all that's downloadable), one is SUPPPOSED to be able to drag soundfiles from the device to the desktop.

So I goes to my session and record a tenor/upright/drums trio, go home and listen to the session and everythings fine. So I fire up the laptop an drag the files in iTunes and everythings fine, I can see them, I can hear them and I can rename the files on my laptop so that they are the tune names. Cool, I unplug the device and SUDDENLY everything disappears. OK I says, I didn't properly shut down and disconnect the device and prolly screwed it up that way. So next night I record my duo gig (guitar and upright) and when I get home I drag everyting into a folder on the laptop. I then grab a file from the laptop, pull into Audacity, edit the beginning and end, save the .aup file and convert it to a wav file. Close everything out, open it back up and GREAT, the .wav is there and it plays. All is right with the world. I close that, I drag all of the files on the H1 to TRASH (to free up memory), "eject" the device and go to bed. Next morning do I not only get a FILE NOT FOUND when I try to open any of the other sound files on the laptop, there are no files read on the H1 AND when I try to record another session on the H1 that evening, it tells me that the memory card is full. Trying to delete files from the H1 but it's telling me there isn't anything to erase.

I'm obviously doing SOMETHING wrong, but what is it? Why don't the files stick? Why can't I clear memory?

I assume you tell the computer to eject the device at the end of your session, right?

Anyway, sounds like a bug in the firmware. Check Zoom's site for updates.

Also, if it were me, I'd pull the memory card out, put it in its adapter, and transfer the files through the SD slot on the computer.

Firmware has something to do with the tv/typewriter thingie, right?

Siriusly, yes, I tell the laptop to eject the device. I show no files on the disk, but there is ZERO available from 1.88 gig.
I'll see if there's a frimware update on the website.

Is it possible that I wiped the disc formatting?

Tried using the SD slot, no joy. Same result.

Try opening them from the SD card using a sound editing program, and then doing a "save as."

And then let me know if this works. I want to buy one of these.

OK, so it looks like I "de-formatted" the disc, I ran through the formatting procedure and that at least opened up the disc memory/erased previous. And yes, whatever I pulled into Audacity got saved, it's just a drag to have to do that right after the gig/session/rehearsal whatever, it would be nice just to drag and drop and worry about it later when I gots more time.

If I can get your e-mail address through your profile, I'll send you what I retained form the duo gig, so you can hear how it sounds. This was on a window ledge immediately behind where we set up.

I have never had a problem using USB or card readers to pull and save files into a folder on my desktop from the H1.

I really don't know how to help you other than to say it IS possible for it to be fairly simple to do.

Does anyone know that are the mics in H1 the same than in H4 (at least they look the same)?

And what are the key differences between the H1 and the H2, since their price difference isn't that big.

+1 to just using the SD card in a reader.
Thats how I do it on my H2, drag the Wav/mp3 file to my hard drive and go from there.

Zoom products have had a curious way of making files disappear. Apparently there is a certain type of SD card which is optomized for the zoom, although they don't make it expressly clear which one that is. Oddly enough, if you have the wrong kind of SD card, some Zooms will accept it, some won't, and the ones that accept it might have problems like this. We have 4 at my work, and from time to time experience random deletions with one or more of them, so we've just had to be super dilligent about backing up the files right away. +1 to a usb SD card reader.

You already know that you have to let it go through it's power down sequence or the data will be lost. As for the Audacity problem... just gotta be more careful about saving backups. I made a "zoom temp" folder on my desktop, which I drag everything into, and i also drag it into my DAW and set the disc allocation to an external, making sure it exists in both places before I clear the SD card.
