Nope, it is pretty simple, so it can be done on veroboard.

Buffering is precisely why it doesn't work with active basses. The Fuzz Face and derivatives rely on loading down your pickups to sound the way they do. Separating your pickups from the input of the circuit via a buffer (which is exactly what an active bass does already) is the reason they sound so different with active basses. So adding another buffer won't help. You need to emulate the inductive and resistive effect of a passive pickup to get it to sound the way it's supposed to.
Thats the tricky part, I really haven't found a good solution on the web, any ideas Taylor?
EDIT: Guess I was writing as you posted. I did see somewhere something about putting a resistor off of the input with an inductor to ground after it that supposedly did that.
If you're talking about the same pedal I am, then it was a one-off clone made by a friend of mine. You may have seen it on various people's boards as it's been passed around but as far as I know there is only one. The second owner replaced one of the knobs with a white one so it's easy to spot!
I'm making my clone, not really too hard. It's my second DIY build, first was a Zvex Super Hard-On, which was really easy as pie.
Almost finished the mammoth but I have to redo soldering the leads to the footswitch, messed up there and there are some issues. I only got to test it with guitar, but it really is over-the-top fuzz heaven
Doing it yourself is a fun project, and if you have any questions there's plenty of DIY'ers on different forums to help you out.
Also, if you do it yourself you save some $250. The components for my SHO were about 30, the real thing costs 205

Once you get the hang of it, you'll realize you can build about any dirt pedal yourself, and customize it to your needs (more/less bass, gain, tone range ..)

Also, is the NPN 2N3904 the only transistor that is recommended, or could any NPN transistor work? (such as a Germanium NPN, or a higher gain silicon transistor)Nope, it is pretty simple, so it can be done on veroboard.

They are where you need to cut the trace underneath. Use a drill bit between your fingers and just spin it around lightly. It will break the trace line.
Your friend most likely got the schematic from the same place or something similar.
Mutt, I would suggest not going to Radioshack, as they overprice everything. Maybe Invalid Link Removed, but their stripboard is pretty big.
I don't really know enough to say which transistors you can replace, but conical should be able to help.
Here is a woolly mammoth clone i bought off of this guy who builds clones for himself but decided to sell this one. No clue if it's a 100% woolly mammoth clone as I have no clue what to look for inside or how to compare schematics but it does sound like a woolly mammoth and all knobs play like what the mammoth demos say they do. It plays great with both passive and active basses but guitar not so much.
