My goodness...it's been ages since I've seen pictures of Peter...looks like he's joined the old age club as much of us have as well.
The last time I saw him was live back in the 70's for a Weather Report concert (Heavy Weather Tour). He was a mite younger back then .

That doesn’t exactly align with either of the code systems used, though it’s close to the 72-80 style. Assuming it should be 0101 0862 that would be P bass (01), rosewood (01), 8th week (08), 1976 (6), Tuesday (2). The B could be for the B width which was standard at the time, though I don’t think I’ve seen many examples with a neck width code in that era.

Every musician has their strengths.

Some people who are amazing in studio, session, or making videos choke when performing live.
Some people who are incredible live performers choke in the studio.
Some people play certain genres of music better than they do others.

I am the opposite of the OP. I relish playing live and am stronger as a live performer than in a studio session where everything feels cold, clinical, and deconstructed. I love the energy of the crowd. I'm decent/functional in the studio, but am a rock star live!

Mine sits on top of a homemade EV TL606 cabinet with a Bag End 15” in my practice room. It still gets regular use.

How’s the shielding in the cavity? If shielding is poor, expect lots of hum.

In my Yamaha BBP35 (same Pj config) there’s a lot of single coil hum from the bridge pickup in venues with lots of lights etc. Not much you can do really. As a fix for at home, try sitting further away from your amp, or rotating your playing position, that helps sometimes.

2 great basses. It’s nice to have choices and options.

It’s one of the better examples I’ve seen of such mods.

That said, I find it completely unnecessary. While not the most beautiful headstock out there, it’s perfectly fine as is, and if you hate it that much, the solution is simple: Don’t get a Sire.

So, I finally decided to measure my bass to understand why I had to shift the strings so far just to get them to align. I can’t say I’m shocked, but I took measurements and confirmed my bridge was drilled off-center. I drilled out the existing screw holes and filled them with maple plugs. Now I’m going to re-drill the bridge to set the proper placement for the bridge, and while I’m at it I think I’ll drill holes for string-thru mounting since the bridge already accepts it anyways

I gave DR Pure Blues a fair run. Mixed results, so I went back to Ernie Ball Classic Rock pure nickels, the reissue of their original '62 to '68 pure nickel strings.

They've got the warmth and clarity I'm after.

I don't play with a pile of gain or effects, preferring to lean into a classic tube amp circuit - your mileage may vary.

I was surprised at how close my Dingwall’s slap tone was to a Stingray Special. I could gotten even closer to the Stingray tone if I had turned up the treble. The JT5 can actually do what I hoped the Lakland 55-94/55-02 could do back in the day. I’m not dumping on Lakland. If I could have afforded a 55-84 back 199-2000, I might still have it because they are great basses. But the humbucker’s location too close to the bridge for a good Stingray tone although its Jazz tone is excellent. The JT5 manages to get great Jazz and Stingrat tones. The P-bass is decent to my ears.

A lot of jazz players still do this.

I love the Echorec at 18v. FATRAT too.

When I started playing as a kid in the ‘70s, I gravitated towards MXR pedals. I had three: the M117 Flanged, M107 Phase 100, and the MX120 Envelope Filter. I still have all of them, and they still work!

If I don't feel the need to be vintagey, I pull out the Zoom multi-effect and use that instead, as it has some fair reproductions of those pedals. Plus whatever else is in there that tickles my fancy, I like my fancy tickled

The Ampeg Classic Preamp is definitely instrument level. When I had a Jay Ganz Power Amp, it had a hard time driving it. I had to use the NUX DI, the Radial Bassbone or the Mesa Highwire buffer with the 32db switch on and a bit of Boost -- to get the levels up. The NUX was the easiest. Bypass the preamp. It's XLR was line level and I just use a CLR to 1/4 to run the Jay Ganz


So OP @Staredge -- run it in front of the amp, Forget the FX loop. The Classic is noisy has a nice tone but will get nosiy pretty fast and the best thing to do is run it in front of a "flat" EQ as best you can

I want to make a ramp as a gift for my nephew, who recently got an Ibanez BTB745- anybody willing to measure the space between pickups? I wouldn’t mind the pickup length as well but I’m certain I can find that

Method of measurement is appreciated info, and I’m also more than happy to accept pictures of a ruler across the gap etc if that’s easier

Appreciate any help, I’d love to be able to surprise him

I’ve been having them for 40 years. The first time I was driving and people were in the car with me. Of course I acted like nothing was happening. Took a year to finally get a diagnosis. Big relief!

When I went to adjust my truss rod with my allen key, I noticed a blockage inside the truss rod where I’d normally adjust it from.
Am I using the wrong tool to adjust the truss
rod? Is it something stuck inside?
The bass is a Yamaha BBVII.

I just bought the same bass. I bought a 5/16 pocket truss rod wrench from StewMac. It probably is a 8 mm nut. Loosen the tension on the strings and insert the wrench (socket) on the nut. Just make sure the socket is fully seated on the nut. Thankfully my truss rod turns because this bass sounds great! 8mm decimal is .315in. 5/16 decimal is .3125.
