Stoner/Doom Bassists thread 31: We never sleep

Rushing the Artist played pretty nice. It was rather awkward to anchor my thumb anywhere, but then again so are Rics haha.

The guy selling it is a real good guy, but he certainly moves a lot of basses. He has/has owned a lot of cool vintage Japanese stuff. I imagine he wants to just try more stuff :D

Also, any of you guys ever hear of Josefus? I had never heard of them before, but the guy I got the records from put this album on when we were shooting the ****. It is rad as ****!!! Sam, this would be one you'd enjoy. He played a track off this that got reeaally heavy.

I was talking about Josephus several threads ago, they're awesome! I like that album a lot, the bass player is great and has pretty great tone considering it's from 1968-69. He even plays power chords!

Yeah Janitor the bass playing is monstrous. Heard a song that started with bass and was hooked 5 seconds in.

I did own an ibanez Ric copy but that was a weird time in my bass playing. I had just switched to stoner rock, I was transitioning to flats, and was running a sans amp RBI pre/power combo that I really hated. I didn't hold onto it for very long.

Demon, i think i've asked this, but i couldn't find the answer... what kind of amp do you use w/ your moog? do you find that the amp makes much of difference? any pedals? i've been messing around w/ some delay recently, and it softens thing up, adding more flexibility.

anyone rock a doubleneck bass/guitar? i'm not really interested in it, just listeinting to a lot of Boris and a little El Ten Eleven.

Just got home from a rare Friday night Cold Mourning band practice. I used the SBMM Ray34CA through my pedalboard, with the new EBS Multidrive (on STD setting, gain at noon), into the GK MB800 through my Ampeg 810e. I have to say I like the combo of the stingray with the Multidrive. I don't care for the tubesim setting much, just sort of makes the tone sound dampened on the high end with some compression, but the STD setting gave it a little girth in the low end and some nice growl through the MB800. The MB800 already has a pretty good sound to start, it just sort of softened the edges a bit and imparted a different character than the built in preamp gain has. I also played through the SVT-CL for good measure. The stingray sounds much better than my Precision has lately, but there's still a certain flubby sound to the low end that just bothers me. I need to bring in my YBA-1 and do a three way head to head matchup between all of them. I don't really have any plans to keep using the Ray34CA for Cold Mourning, but it did make me think going back to my Carvin (which has a similarly tight, growly and slightly mid scooped tone) would probably get my tone closer to where I want than the Precision right now.

Pics tomorrow, but I got it!

First Impressions...

She's a bit rough, but that just means she knows what shes doing. I can feel the riffs in her. The neck is a chuck of wood, huge plus, pun intended...

I fixed the bridge already, the numnut that put the adjustment screws for the mutes in, put them in crooked, so they were stuck half working, simple fix. The frets are, what frets? But they feel like a fretless bass without the worry about intonation, which I've been having a problem with recently. The setup is nowhere near perfect, but she's playable, and I feel you should have to battle your bass a bit. You have to concur it.

I feel this is the start of a beautiful relationship. Kinda makes up fro the trouble I've been having with the Sunn preamp.

I've run the moog through an Orange Ad200 , SVT , Trace V8. I haven't really found much of a difference between them. Best is to run it through a good p a. I tried running it through my board but it didn't sound that good. It's a good way to find out what pedals have low end loss. There is so much in the moog that you don't really need effects on it anyway.

I have a double neck they're fun but clumsy. You can do some cool stuff with a looper. It's better to run two rigs and boards for it though.
