See http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=243070 for background. The Ampeg solution didn't really work out and wasn't plausible.

So back to square one.

I went to Rock City Guitars in Somerville and they had a lovely B-15S (which I've wanted for a long time), but would have been underpowered and quite frankly, I don't really need another Ampeg amp :)

They told me about the Bergantino, but it wasn't in stock. They did have the IP310, though. A bit more background (http://www.talkbass.com/forum/showthread.php?t=243167) - I've always pretty much used a 1x15" or 2x15" except for the SB-12 I owned for awhile. I generally don't like speakers smaller than 15".

I also am a tube guy - solid state doesn't work for me historically. I tried that new Yamaha digital one as well as a few others over the years.

All you need for the IP series since it has the built-in power is a DI for an active bass and a DI with a gain stage for a passive bass. I tried the IP310 with an ART Tube MP. Holy crap. This thing sounded friggin' amazing. I didn't have my basses with me, but this thing still sounded good.

So, I asked when the IP112 was coming in and wanted to audition it. Now, I know that the price is nuts ($1800 or so), but in my quest for tone and lightness, I've learned you can't be cheap. The Walkabout Scout certainly wasn't.

So they got it in the next week and based on my SB-12 experience, I was thinking it would have no low end. I eat my words. To say this amp sounded amazing would be the understatement of the year. I tried the IP112 with my Fender Bass V, my '78 P, and my two Tokais ('57 and '64 reissues). Again, tried it with the ART Tube MP. I got the sound of my basses with a tad bit of tube coloration, and whoooo boy. I got that "oh yeah, this is going to be a painful purchase, but oh so worth it" moment.

I even tried it with the 1x12" matching extension cabinet (which takes it to 1000 watts), and it sounded even better. But I don't need 1000 watts.

I bought that and the ART (got the ART cheap, what the heck) and brought it to rehearsal for the Rush tribute band. There was the sound I had been looking for and it cut. No fiddling like the Mesa. The band was amazed, too - this thing is L-O-U-D.

I then used it that weekend on two gigs with the Rush band, and in both places, the sound guys were amazed. At the second club despite having a line into the board, he didn't have me on. That's how much the Bergantino cuts.

With the IP112 you can hear every note cleanly with deep, rich bass and nice highs. Perfect balance. No mud (unless you have it at the pre).

The IP series will really only sound as good as your bass is - nothing to hide it. The pre you use is the only place that can color your sound more (besides the horn attenuator on the can).

I can't describe how small the IP112 is, either. At both venues I got looks which said, "You're playing through that dinky thing?", but they summarily shut up once we started playing.

It's easier to carry than the Walkabout Scout is not only because it is smaller physically, but the handle is on top and in a place where things are balanced.

Bottom line: if you can afford it, audition it. You won't be disappointed.

Anyone want a Walkabout Scout 1x15"? LOL

Those things sound crazy good.
We did a big A/B at Tom Bowlus's place and everybody loved them (the 310, 112 & 322).

My Acoustic Image Focus 1 into a Berg 112 A/B'd next to the IP-112 was scarry in how close they sounded.
I'll bet if you didn't know which was which, you may not be able to tell them apart.

The IP stuff from Bergantino is awesome.

I tried one out and my jaw darn near hit the floor. I laughed out loud. I thought for sure the shop owner had secretly plugged in a few extension cabs.

No way is something that small supposed to be able to produce such enormous amounts of clean, tight, deep bass. If you've got the funds, and want a super-portable rig, you can't beat the IP112, in my book.

When the owner DID plug in the extension 112, it got "stupid loud" to borrow a phrase from Tom Bowlus.

Personally, I'm GAS-ing for the IP310, but then again, I don't move my rig much, if ever. I liked the punchier sound of the 310 a little better, but the IP112 was positively amazing.

Bottom line: if you can afford it, audition it. You won't be disappointed.

The converse of this is also true. If you CAN'T afford it, DON'T audition it, unless you are a huge fan of GAS pains. :(

I also have found with an amp stand, this thing is that much better.

More accurate is that the IP112 is stupid loud. With the extra, it's stoooooooooooooooopid loud. I'm STILL in disbelief how loud the 1x12" is alone - and I own it!

I'm auditioning other preamps right now to see if I can get a tad more of a vintage vibe, but for the $45 I paid for the ART, it's not the best, but the price to performance ratio is pretty good. Trying rationalize if the SVP-CL is 10x better, or the Sansamp at $200 will be that much of an improvement.

I use a Thunderfunk 550 with my HT112 all the time for rehearsals and smaller gigs and find it to be a great little rig... but I was under the impression the IP112 stomped a single HT112 with 'what ever' amp... ?

I was actually not that impressed with the IP112 that Mike and I played at Tom's house (the IP310 was another story!). However, I believe the IP112 at Tom's was a prototype that did not have the same DSP program as the 'production models'.... so I have a feeling that the 'final' models pop a little more.

That being said, there's only so much sound that can come out of a single 112.

Mike, for the record, the program that was in the IP112 that was at my gathering has been changed, and I have to say, it's quite the improvement. Jim was experimenting a bit with the program in that particular cab. We need to revisit that "shootout." :D

See my comments above. That particular IP112 had a different program, it turns out. I sent the amp back to Jim and had it reprogrammed. It now sounds much better to my ears.

Tom.

I really want to love the IP112, but it is my least favorite of the three IPs I've played. (310, 212 and 112).

The 310 is amazing all around cab and the 212 is an awesome rock/fingerstyle cab. That sound even better together. I got to play that set up with a Millennia TD-1. :bassist: That sounded amazing.

I guess I have higher standards for the 112 since I already play a HT/EX112 rig for a lot of gigs and I really need a reason to justify the cost.

Now for a quick u-turn..... truth is I'll probably buy a IP112 in the near future. It isn't my favorite of the three, but it still sounds great and it is so practical (except for the $$) and I don't really have a need for the other sizes. Louder rock gigs get the Berg NV610. One or two 112s can handle everything else on electric or upright. I've been doing the various small pres into my AI Focus SA for a while now and I would like to downsize even more to a IP112 plus my HT112 and sell my EX112 adn possibly the Focus SA. I would love to run a Millennia TD-1 in front of it. Those are amazing. The tube side sounded great, but I was totally blown away by the solid state sound. I've also played a U5 in front of the 112 and I wasn't that crazy about it, but that was mainly with my upright. I can't wait to hear my D-Tar Solstice in front of the IP112. That could totally get the pen moving on the checkbook.

Considering that I am currently trying to scrape up enough money to buy a used HT112, I'm not going anywhere near these cabs for a while. I'm in love with the HT112, but I'm afraid playing the IP112 will make the HT with my QSC look like the redheaded step child...

Tom, I may take you up on that offer this weekend.
Then we can compare the IP112 to my Focus and an HT112 again.
The difference in tone was minimal.
So a Focus and HT112 (both used could be a great deal)could be the poor mans IP112!?!?!

I"ll have a scotch in all your honor Saturday. Have fun. I'll try to make it next time.

I was looking forward to accidentally setting my Heart Rock on Mike's Focus and crushing it into a little pile of aluminum, plastic, and wire:D
