Whammy Showdown!

This is something that we've tried to set up before, but never seems to work out... Nobody ever seems to have two types of Whammies at one time--or at least never have any soundclips

But yeah, some soundclips of a couple differenet Whammy variants through the same gear would be really awesome. Besides the obvious preset differences, I really want to know how my Whammy 4 stacks up against the Bass Whammy sound-wise.

i think that we should start by posting all of the modes for each Whammy so that people can decide from that which Whammy is for them.
i also think we should do what a few guys are doing for the Synth shootout, where we get all 4 different Whammys together and have a few people check them out and only compare the units based on the modes that are the same.

As I said before I have the XP100 and the Bass Whammy, and I prefer the Bass Whammy of course.

First, it because it hold better the low notes than XP100. The XP100 sounds good in the first three strings (E-A-D-G), on the low E the tracking of the octaves (on Octave UP setting) sound irregular and not perfect creating an awful sound. For me the ultimate whammy test is to play a song from Tool (sorry I'm a huge fan-their bassist is the reason why I have brought a Whammy pedal) named The Pot, the riff around 2:51 when Justin hit a C chord and do a whammy slide. If I could sound equall to him, it's a good whammy. For this reason I prefer the Bass Whammy because I could do low D whammy slides and they sound great. With the my XP100 (maybe I had bad luck in this baby) I couldn't do this slides because they sound like crap.

Second, the XP100 treadle or expression pedal is difficult to control (small travel-10º), so it's hard to control the sweep. In the other way, the the Bass Whammy have a bigger travel - (17,5º) which it's more cool to control the effect.

Third, the settings in the Bass Whammy are pretty enough, the only miss-out it's the 2 octaves Up for the craziest users. The XP100 have all the settings of the Bass Whammy plus another pitch shift, harmony, auto wah, wah and volume options. By the way the wah options sound really bad because of the small travel of the treadle. The auto wah options I didn't explored to much to have an opinion about it.

Finally, I have noticed that the Original Whammy, Whammy II and the Bass Whammy have a chip from the IVL company. Maybe this could do difference to the other versions. Maybe IVL is to Digitech like Telray to Morley Wah pedals?!

Note: I never played through a WH-1, Whammy II or the WH-4, so I don't what is the behavoir of which pedal wih the low notes.

Well the WH2 and the Bass Whammy were essentially the same pedal, just one designed for guitar, and the one specifically for bass. That WH2 and Bass Whammy a couple different settings between the two.

Yeah, the Whammy II has the exact same stuff as the WH-1. The WH-1 only goes for more because its what Morello/Satriani/Vai use. I just got the re-issue, and its fine for me.

The IVL chips are what supposedly make these whammies preferrable to the IV and XP100.

I have never compared them, no.

MADChuudoku on this forum is from the UK, so maybe I can get him to lend me a WH-1 to compare to my WH-4.

I will be making a thread with soundclips of the Whammy IV. Which I think, hold the low end pretty well. Tracking is iffy, but people forget about the RECALIBRATION feature. Mine has a good sweep and tracks the low E ok at times, but it gets iffy. But its nothing distortion or overdrive cant cover up.

iv owned THREE whammies, wh-4, bass whammy, and currently own the xp-100, with my expieriences, the wh-4 had the best tracking, the bass whammy maintained low end the best and to an extent sounded much more natural in its harmonies, the xp-100 had the most settings

i dont have any clips of the wh-4, i sold it to Tbird a while ago and he and i will get together by the end of the week to make comparasins and posibly record clips.. it will be the wh-4 against the xp-100

make note that i made a mistake in it where i dont turn the whammy on soon enough and u can actually hear how natural it sounds when i turn it on, as if i hit the note isntead of put somethign digital on.. (the mistake is at 1:28) and notice how i didnt lose any low end either.
