As many of you know, in the course of playing bass guitar and other low register instruments, we run into the need to amplify our sound. As many different audio companies have emerged since the boom in amplifiers in the earlier part of last century, products of all types, prices and qualities have been developed. Cheaper ones tend to have less desirable aural qualities, which can be described as "muddy" or "tinny".
I am here to talk about one of these words that, if you may or may not know, is actually a racial slur.
The word I'm talking about is: Honky.
If you didn't know, the h-word is a racial epithet for Caucasians used in the United States. I have seen, on several occasions, users of TalkBass casually using the term "honky" to describe the audio qualities of a speaker cabinet, like it was any other word in the dictionary!
I urge all of you to stop using this word, and stop others from using it. If you must describe a high-midrange frequency reverberation, please use the politically correct term, "squawky".
Thank you.
