Millenia TD-1 - COVER PROTOTYPE

Here it is, the first custom cover for those of you who choose NOT to rack-mount your beloved TD-1:

I fabricated one out of plain 1/8 aluminum and one out of checkerplate. The one you see above, is the only one I had powder coated, and it fits perfectly!! I suspect the checkerplate will look great, but it is much thinner and will be susceptible to dents etc.

Total build cost: $60

Please let me know what you think, or more importantly, if you want one too! :D

Looks swell! I could imagine putting a "rollbar" type guard across the face, with maybe 1.25" clearance over the knob caps, both to protect the knobs and for use as a carry handle. But I could also see that detracting from the looks.

Thaks guys! I will find the perfect handle solution for my needs soon, but it works just fine for now.

About the cover affecting airflow... compared to the unit with no cover on it, of course it will! But not enough to negatively affect it in any way.
The manual recommends that when rackmounted (single or a pair side by side) to leave one rack screw hole of space between it, and the next heat producing unit above. The airspace provided with the cover is about half that size, but it acts as a heat sink versus a heat source. The sides are also equally well vented.

To be honest, I haven't had the chance to gig in a hot club with it yet, but in my studio, the cover won't even get luke warm. Besides, with the cover on, it still has more airflow than any SS amp or tube pre I've ever owned!

They cost about $1500 at various online merchants.

I have compared it to my Summit TD-100 which is a great pre and at $450 a great price.

In comparison, the Millenia is sooooo much more versatile (as reflected in it's higher price) which is why I bought it, but soundwise... they are different shades of GREAT :D

The only thing I don't like about my TD-1, is the ugly chassis and handle, which as you can see, have now disappeared :ninja: Oh, it's heavy too!! 13 lbs I think!

Design improvement concept. Stay with me here.


Okay... get onto McMaster-Carr's website at http://www.mcmaster.com and look up vibration damping mounts. In the online catalog, it's page 1314. I dunno what thread sizes are on the chassis of your TD-1, so find the rubber isolators that match the thread size.

Then, taking the measurements of the rubber mount that fits your thread size, build your plate frame wider and taller. Wider, to install the rubber mounts to the outsides of the TD-1, then slide it inside the plate, and insert screws through the plate into the tapped end of the mounts. INSTANT SHOCKMOUNTING. Make that cover plate taller as well, so the amp itself doesn't rest on top of your cab, just the cover plate. So if the amp takes a bounce or sees tons of bumps on the drive home, all the vibrations get dampened by these rubber mounts. You could unscrew the giant rubber feet from the bottom of the amp, to keep the overall height down a bit. Heck, even reattach those rubber feet to the cover plate. Give the cover plate four bends, and make a C-shaped channel, to mount those feet to underneath the amp.


Customizing your gear is the ultimate fun in noodling and tweaking. You'll have a completely shock-mounted gig-bag sized amp.

Very cool idea! I'd like to see the dimensions available for those nifty feet. If they made them small enough to remain practical, you could get pretty high tech with this thing.

I thought a wood freak like yourself wood be building out of quilted bubinga with bird's eye maple trim!

Nice! Shouldn't have mentioned the $60.00 cost, though; what is this a charity site?

Yeah, I forgot to add profit margins onto the cost :p Anything to help out another bass player I guess. :cool:

I'd love to hear your bass through my rig too, but I'm not too excited about you showin' me up on my own rig... your chops are ridiculous. :hiding:
