Double Bass Blues Turnarounds

The thread on Walking Blues got me to thinking about the turnarounds. Upon haring myself play for several years I discovered I have three stock turn arounds that I use (particularlly on a twelve bar). I start on the one and walk chromaticlly from three to five, I use a line that sounds like a bastardized 'I'm Into Something Good' (Hermen's Hermits) melody, or If it fits I do the Rhythm Changes. What are some of your stock turnarounds? I need something new to steal...I mean be inspired by.

When playing in G I can't help using an altered scale over the D (V) on the turnaround, D, D#, G#, G, C, Bb, A, G and then onto the C (IV) as a dom7, C, E, F, F#, G, A, Bb, B, C and then back to root again as a dom7 G , B, C, Db, D, E, F, G, D. I'll add extra passing chromatic tones as 16th notes depending how I feel. Often gets a "look" from guitarists with little jazz harmony knowledge though. Nothing fancy really except on the V.

So many turnarounds and subs.....so little time:)


1. Teenagers cannot have the Blues. They ain't fixn to die. Adults play the Blues. In Blues, adulthood means being old enough to get the electric chair if you shoot a man in Memphis.

2. Blues is not a matter of color. It is a matter of bad luck. Tiger Woods cannot have the blues. Sonny Liston could have the blues.

3. I don't care how tragic your life is or may have been, if you own a computer, you cannot have the Blues.:D

Also I believe that this is the first time I've ever heard a song by Madonna that i didn't want to hurl. Love the 7. bet that turns a few heads. Always nice to see people try to dance in 7!:hyper:

Finally...the 2nd tune really drew me in. I'm a sucker for those ostinato bass lines and it's just really well done. Great Job:D

TreyMan, they ain't got any waves in Bulgaria. Instead of surfing, they developed local dances. Dancing in seven is a beautiful thing, and not uncommon. How about one of those Watermen dancing in 13 while navigating "Jaws" on Maui! That would be something to behold. I don't doubt that they could, either!:)

Yeah some of those folk dances in odd times are a thing to behold!

Not to get to corny, but for me, surfing is dancing. It is also total improvisation. No two waves are exactly alike. Each does something different and you adapt and react. The better you are, the more you've practiced, the more skill you have to deal with any situation! Big waves are the rush of a lifetime! Although I don't ride them with faces anywhere near 40 to 50 feet. Every year I get a bit older and slower and I make a pledge to the wife that I won't go out on big days. This pledge typically lasts till about December! Ha maybe this year will be different!

I know this is a dorky question, but how do you get those nice little quote boxes aroun d something you've copied? I'm still in learning mode:confused:

Yes, it's a wonderful book. Victor was very wise to keep stating that even HE isn't sure if the events really happened. Either way, it doesn't matter. Very creative man, love him very much, I'd like to meet him.

Tom Brown Jr. wrote a book called "Grandfather" that I found much less convincing, though Tom is a Master and an amazing guy for sure! Without him, I doubt that Victor would be doing what he's doing now.

Loved the description that Micheal had of the blues in Victor's book, since I play alot of blues myself.
