you can have more than 10, of course, i'm just thinking that a lot of folks, if they could have anything they wanted, realisitically would end up with about 10.

of course, with my wedding bass and this pending potential ebay score, my conklin total will be up to 11, but who's counting ;) :D

Seriously though, if the purpose for the basses is collecting rather than actually playing, I'd probably want to try completely different things from different luthiers whom I've come to really admire the appearance of their work, but haven't been able to try their basses (ie: Bebensee, Thompson, Zon, Huff, etc). There is a lot of really beautiful craftsmenship out there, plus I'm pretty sure their basses don't sound half bad, either.

That covers a pretty wide range... I could easily hoarde just about every Fender Jazz bass I'd come in contact though. :)

I would fill out my current F Bass selection so I had one of each model, including the Caron Signature.

THEN one or two each from:

1. Conklin (I've already emailed Bill about when the Rocco bass might be out - I know it's Korean, but I love the whole vibe of the thing)
2. Sadowsky, maybe a 5 string quilt top
3. Zon (fretless 5)
4. Lull
5. Lakland (probably Skyline series)
6. MTD
7. Alembic
8. Fender P - 1960's beater

etc, etc, etc

I don't really have any interest in collecting at all.

And I certainly have no interest in having more than one bass that is remotely similar.

Although I am certain that given the time and resources, I would eventually be able to fill the ten slots. Although whether the number was two, ten or 31, I am sure I would be regularly selling a bass or two to make room for the something else I am interested in.

Right now, if my lotto ticket hit, the first priority would be a a neckthrough Ken Smith 5 or 6.

I'd also like a fretless five string. I'd probably buy a Zon.

I'd also really like to get Bill Conklin to build me a bass.

It would also be really easy for me to spend stupid money on a nicer upright.

Past that, I'd have to work on it.

1-4, 8, 9 would be tuned B-E-A-D-G-C-F

5 would be tuned F#-B-E-A-D-G-C

6, 7- F#-B-E-A-D-G-C-F

and 10 would be tuned B-E-A-D-G-C.

1-9 would all have magnetic, synth and piezo pickups.

10 would have a mic, piezo, and synth pickups.
