Double Bass Ibanez Promethean Bass Combo with an upright for jazz gigs?

So I have seen the one short thread on this but it didnt have much to offer. Has anyone used this yet with an upright for jazz gigs?

Just need something that has room so i can add to it for any electric gigs but the upright is primary.

Also looking to stay close to a grand with all things considered, including a cheap extension cab.

I tried one a few weeks ago. I liked it but ended up keeping my Shuttle 3.0 combo for small gigs. The Shuttle sounds more natural to my ears and Promethean didn't seem as clear. The Promethean definetely has more gain but I have a Shuttle 9/Bergie for that. I have an upright freind that swears by his Promethean. He bought the extension cab but has never needed to use it. Hope this helps.

I finally got to play on the promethean combo the other day. I took my bass into a local shop that had one and it sounded great. It reminded me a lot of the original Acoustic Image that I used years ago only it had even more power and volume that still sounded natural. There is quite a bit of flexibility with eq and tone control. My only hesitation is the fact that no one is talking about them and they haven't been out long enough to be really put to the test. I have never played on the Mark Bass combos or the Genz Benz combos so I am curious if the extra few hundred dollars is really worth it. Thanks for your replies.

I probably haven't been beating the drum enough with regard to the Promethean combos, but I own the 2x10 combo, and we reviewed the 1x10 combo, and I am quite impressed. They haven't had any reliability issues that I am aware of, either.

I played an electric through the 1 x 10 a few months ago and really liked it. It seemed to have plenty of power and the EQ seemed flexible. If necessary, an Fdeck wonderbox wouldn't be an expensive way to make it work for DB.

That said, I picked up a GK MB150 and think it is nice with DB. I sold one a few years ago and have been looking to replace it. A friend just loaned one to me because it was 'broken', he hadn't used it in years, and I agreed to fix it. A cleaning of the usual jacks fixed it. Some guys hate them, but it sounds good to me and they are workhorse combos.

Clink,
I owned a 200MB that I wish I still had! Lightweight, Great Pre Amp, Small Size. I traded it in to by a Trace Eliot TAB 12, but there was a design problem with that amp, that caused the speaker to distort. I ended up with a MBE that I used for a while, but I didn't like the midrange voicing on that amp nearly as well. I should have traded it back for a MBS, but I saved my gig money for about a year and bought a Walter Woods MI-400-8 which is still my main amp.

There's a nice 200MB for sale on the slab side.
The truth is I'm beginning to hate amps. Just give me something I can plug into that will allow me to be heard and sounds decent. Been through a slew of different amps and speaker cabinets and wasted a lot of time and effort chasing the pot of gold at the end of the rainbow. An MB150S will cover 90% of my gigs and work just fine.

Clarification: I'm not saying that we should settle for stuff that doesn't sound good. It's just that WE first have to sound good playing a bass that we know and can make music with. The amp is cake, or icing, or is it the little sprinkles on top? ;)

Still surprised that more people haven't started using the Promethean 1x10 combo with DB for jazz gigs. I tried it out and it seemed almost perfect at such a different price point than the other rigs out there. It also has the power to push an extra cab for an electric rig which makes it an ideal all in one rig. Just hesitant to make the purchase because I usually like to stick with what is tried and true. Any thoughts? I have a little over a grand and I need a rig that will work in almost any setting. If I go with the Markbass for instance I wont have the funds for an extra cab.

Are these amps being used with a preamp or is the input impedance high enough (one megophm or higher) for piezo pickups? I can't find any specs on the output? 8, 4 or 2 ohms?

I am still using my Yamaha BBT500H, a similar amp but shortlived in music stores and highly under rated amp for both upright and electric bass. Has any one ever compared them?

Hello,
New to TalkBass... Just wanted to offer some insight into the Promethean 1x10 Combo with upright..

Like all of us "Gear Crazy" bass players, I've tried Genz, Acoustic Image, Walter Woods, Blah, Blah Blah.. I was very surprised by the Promethean combo.. Set absolutely flat with nothing added (no vibe knob) except the pre for my pickup system, this thing sounded great. I've used it with trio, quartet and big band.. Plenty of power with natural tone.. I do sometimes use the Genz 6.0 with a Yamaha 1X10 but, seem to prefer the Promethean combo when I know it has to be right.. It seems to work well under any and all conditions...

I've also used it when I've had to double (Electric and Upright) and it sounds great.

Lefty Bass, welcome to TB. Good to have you with us.

And thanks for the report.

P.S. I found your myspace page, and enjoyed visiting. But there is a slight typo in the home page listed in your TB profile. Boogaloo baby. :D

And please fill out your TB profile with gear and such, if you like, please.

I Bought the 10" combo a few days ago. Played an upright gig with it yestarday. Cocktail jazz with no drummer. Worked very well.

My bass is a carved Musima with an Auele Piezo. It works with Markbass combos also but is a little better with a preamp in between. I have a Fishman platinum and Aguilar Tone Hammer which both seem to work well.

Just came home from another gig. This time I used the Promethean with another cabinet for electric bass. I guess I like a bit coloured sound because I think the little combo sounded very nice with upright and Electric. It certainly is not "hifi". I used to have an EBS Drome 12 which worked quite well with db. Didn't have enough bottom for electric bass though. I've also had GK MB150s which I traded for the Drome.
