Ibanez has my favorite mass production neck in general, and their PJs really have a nice sound, from the cheapo models all the way up

The new Yamaha BB series are tough to beat at that price range. Played a nice one the other day with a $1000 CDN price tag. Had a great , transparent preamp with passive switch. Nice comfortable satin neck, and the stock pickups sound great!

This is exactly what I'm talking about...
Yamaha BB434 or BB734A. Use the rest of your $1K budget for other things.
I found my Fender FSR '75 Jazz Bass (used, but in mint condition - it still had the plastic on the pickguard) for under a grand.
It's an amazing instrument. My only mod was to add a Gotoh bridge with titanium saddles - a mod I'll probably do to my AVRI '75 as well.
It's one of the best-sounding & most versatile P/J basses I've ever owned, and I love the aged candy-apple red finish.

Hmmm, I’ll have to see what I can do about that. Might be just a little tweak like loosen the string and move a tad. Doesn’t affect playing.

The Jazz on the right after my post has a similar miss alignment on the D string though not as bad
Here is my pick: Jericho Alpha Blacker
Probably a G&L Tribute SB-2 for around 500 bucks. Use some of the rest on a nice fret dressing, a new nut, a good set of strings, and a high quality HSC or gig bag.
Alternately, the Tribute LB-100, and add the J pickup yourself.
The Squier VM and CV basses (and guitars) are a really big bang for the buck too, and some even came stock with a P/J setup.
If you wanted to make full use of the $1,000, and not come in under it, then you could take a few steps up in build quality and buy a used Fender Classic Series '50s or '60s P, and then add the J pickup yourself. That's probably what I would do.
All this is geared around getting a P and adding the J. But the other way in to a P/J is to buy a J and replace the neck pickup with a P pickup, and then get a new pickguard to match. This mod can be hidden if you choose to go back to stock, and it's the best way to go if you like Jazz Bass toothpick necks.

Invalid Link Removed. Excellent thin and swift neck, powerful pickups, magnificent lutherie, series/parallel switch. That's the best PJ I've ever had.
I've never played either, but I like the look of the USA one specifically because it doesn't have a pickguard. I like the black too.
