Am I foolish for thinking about...

I think this is exactly right. The same reason that basses have a longer scale length than guitars, 5 string basses benefit from a longer scale length more than 4 string basses.

Am I foolish for thinking about...

It seems more risky to me than just using the extra $200 to get a better bass, the electronics and such might "fit" better with the instrument if you're not replacing them before you get it. At the very least, get the bass and play it for a few days, it might play better than you think.

Why do people ask for opinions and then argue or dismiss them?

Especially prevalent in a field like music, where "objective truth" is hard to find, and almost everything boils down largely to personal preference. It feels pretty great when your personal preference gets validated, although that comes at the expense of actually learning and expanding your...

    Another Dingwall Super J Video

I should really stop watching people play these basses, giving me a pretty serious case of GAS. Dingwalls certainly are the best thing to come out of Saskatoon.

Importance of Acoustic Instrument for Developing Tone

I think ultimately an acoustic bass guitar is actually nothing like playing an electric, they might as well be as different as a guitar and a bass guitar. Moreover, the sound that lots of people associate with acoustic bass is the sound of piezo pickups into an amp, and not the "true" sound of...

    The importance of design...

That's really interesting about the fanning out of strings, I feel almost exactly the opposite way. Having the strings fan out I think matches the visual "weight" of the body of the bass with the string spacing, as opposed to the "weight" near the headstock. Also can make it a little bit more...

    Would you rather...

Ding for sure, I've been lucky to have only gotten one ding on any instrument I really cared about, and that was when the drummer in my band was playing it. I guess I've learned my lesson now :)

    Studying with non-bass players...who has done that/suggestions?

I mean, learning more about music is never a bad idea. Especially an established drummer will have probably played with more bassists than a bassist would, so they might have more ideas about what makes a bass player fun/not fun to play with. A lot of what I know about bass and music in general...

What caused you to change your technique?

Recording yourself is the biggest thing for me, same as lots of people in this thread. Especially getting frustrated when I write or improvise a line that I can't play cleanly. That frustration really leads me to getting into the practice room and digging down into my technique and how I'm...

    weed and you bass playing

It's just "make me smart and fast" juice, how could it not be good for playing bass?

    2nd recording- thoughts?

Thats the way it goes! I have found as I've gotten better at recording, my songs sound a little bit more tolerable on lesser systems, whether thats a $20 bluetooth speaker or a phone speaker.

    weed and you bass playing

I've seen some people play just as well when they're high as a kite, and some that should never even THINK about weed while playing music. Myself I'm in the second camp, every time I play with some friends on it it feels like my fingers are made of lead. There might be something to the idea of...

    2nd recording- thoughts?

I feel like this track would really benefit from a shaker/tambourine/cocktail drumkit to give it a little more rhythmic drive. Bass tone definitely on point though!

Why does the bass player still stand in back?

Probably also depends on the style of music that you play. I play a bunch of metal/metalcore/prog metal and it seems like in those types of bands the bass player and the 1-3 g******ists like to just stand in a line behind the singer. To each their own though.
