Would you rather...

Which would you rather have happen?

  • Have an unrepairable ding to your most prized and pristine instrument.

  • Suffer a broken toe.

Results are only viewable after voting.
If you didn't go to the hospital, or at a minimum get radiological confirmation of a fracture, you gain no protection against dings.

This has nothing to do with what you just said, but it just popped into my head while reading your response :)....

Tape is to broken toe :: Magic marker is to ding.

I like "would you rather." Fun game. Will we see more of these shenanigans in the future?

I voted ding. I've gigged, toured, and played the piss out of basses. They have a few dings (though they still look great.) My cars have dings (I take care of my car, but it's a work/life vehicle. I drive it places, it gets dinged by shopping carts in the parking lot, acorns from trees fall on it when I get the lucky shady spot) and it's fine. Dings are character. Dings are life. Dings are stories.

Yeah, broken bones can heal... but like others have said, I'm getting old. I'm in my 40s and don't heal or recover as quickly as I did when I was in my 20s.

If something happened wherein my bass got totaled... a new bass would probably cost me a LOT less than medical expenses. So, better the bass then me.

If this didn’t kill me a broken toe sure the hell isn't so...

Ding by a million miles. Dings are simply character, proof that an instrument's been used for its intended purpose. I certainly don't go out of my way to ding my instruments (all in hard cases, don't really use stands, straplocks, etc.), but I don't go far out of my way NOT to, either.

For me, it's kind of like how at the end of Inglorious Basterds Brad Pitt says he'll get chewed out, he's been chewed out before, but with broken toes. I have broken toes and fingers and with the exception of the last finger I broke, they all healed quickly.

Don't be a wuss. Bones heal. Basses don't. It's that simple. I've had broken toes, they're not fun but they heal. Our bodies have this incredible ability to mend injured bones, the knitting is really amazing. But you can't knit a guitar. Take your beating and pay a little extra for a hardshell case.
