Replace CIJ J Bass pickups with vintage Fenders?

Hi all, I'm thinking about modding my Fender Jazz, a '04/05 crafted in Japan model with P/J's on. First port of call, to me, is pickups. And it just so happens a pair has come available. My tutor is selling some original '70's pickups for around £200 each. Is it worth changing my current...

    Which of these two basses?

Play the same thing on both of them and see how they feel and how the different tones stack up. And if your active is a full 3-band EQ, pup pan etc you can probably get a very good passive sound out of it.

JUSTIFYING SPENDING BIG $$ ON A CUSTOM BASS...

I spent £2000 on a handmade Overwater (British bass company) after trying about4 or 5 of them and deciding that offerings from everywhere else just didn't cut it. If you are gonna spend that money you need to be 100% sure that you won't regret it, because you'll end up with a bass you don't play...

    I need a thumb rest - I think!

Get a tap washer (metal ring that you put on a tap) and glue it in the right position. One of my lecturers at college has one glued onto the pickguard of his Jazz and it seems to work

Are back pains a good reason to sell a bass?

It's not worth getting hurt for the sake of a bass, regardless of how good it is.

    Show your Ashdown

ABM500 EVO original, running into an ABM810, and occasionally ABM115. Picked it all up for under £1000, and I've not played a better rig.

    Show your Ashdown

The ABM115 is a great cab, but I feel it's a little too quiet and there isn't quite the punch for me. If I had the transportation, stage space and felt cocky, I'd use it on my gigs. But for now I'll stick with the smaller, more manoeuvrable ABM810...

TC TonePrint Profiles For Bass Released!

According to Janek Gwizdala, the guy who invented the Toneprint concept got invited to Apple HQ in California because he was the first guy to do something that even Apple didn't know their technology could do. Such a brilliant idea.

ever just brain farted on a song?

Had it yesterday jamming Under the Bridge. Completely forgot the bridge and outro, the 2 parts which bassists love. Seeing as though I played it with a band for about 6 weeks solid I should know it.

If it sounds good FOH does onstage matter?

If you can;t hear what you want to hear then no, it's not alright. For the punters it's fine but you need to get monitor mixes with what you think might help you. I generally like kick, vocals and brass in the monitor. Not guitar cause that's always a bit too loud and my guitarist isn't very...

    New MIA P's vs. New 70's P's - a few concerns

Could always get a Jazz with P/J pickups and roll off tone and J pup, and us a pick and foam mute for that authentic Motown sound. This means you don't have a bass you'll only use for 3 or 4 genres of music.

so what do you guys think? (jazz critique)

I'd say practise your intonation anyway, regardless of if someone says it's off. And maybe just cut down on the fills. It's better to play less then if they give you 1 solo in the whole gig then you blow everyone away than to try and flourish all the time.

'If only it had a maple board, id be all over it'

I prefer ebony to maple, but that doesn't put me off trying basses with rosewood, maple or pau ferro boards. And if the bass sounds better without maple, why choose maple?

Getting a new bass? Fender Jazz?

Most basses are good for slapping, really. Active is really useful onstage if you're a metre or 2 from your amp and you need some EQ changes, but not essential. 5 string Jazzes are probably the best 5 strings I've played, IMO.
