Show your Ashdown

any one know how the mag 400 compares to the newer line or the abm? i havent found much on this model and decided to get one anyway (found a really good deal and wanted an ashdown amp)....

Do you mean the 300 or the 600? Wasn't aware there was a 400, not one listed on their site either

I've had a Mag 300 combo (older non Evo 2) and a Mag Evo 2 300 head and now have an ABM 500. I'd recomend any of them, had great experience with them all. It depends on what you're after whether you need the ABM. If you want the flexibility of switchable functions (via footswitch) eg. EQ, valve, octaver or compression or more variability in tone go for the ABM. However if you'll never use most of these functions and don't fiddle too much with your EQ go for the Mag. I actually prefered the flat sound of the MAG, could just plug in and get a decent tone without too much tweeking. The bright and deep buttons also made an instant good tone IMO. I think the Ocataver is a gimmick on the MAG though as its either on or off, you can't switch it easily during playing as no footswitch. If you do a song that has octaver on all the way through then no probs.

However i can get the same tone (and more) on the ABM but i have to dial it in a bit more. EQ is also slightly more flexible (7 band as opposed to 5 on the MAG). I would listen to the MAG and see if you like its stock tone.

The other difference i noticed (may just be a one off?) is that my MAG made my violin bass hum like crazy if i got too close to it, where as the ABM doesn't. They are both grounded correctly but i'm guessing the ABM is screened better.

looks like its the same as the 300 but with a slightly bigger power amp and twin fans, which is a bonus. If its the same thinking as the ABM the 2 fans will be operating at a slower speed so there's less background noise. If you can get the 600 for a similar price i'd be tempted to go for that, especially if you can get the Evo 2 specs. Or get a 2nd hand ABM

Thanx for the info, i already got the mag400 and tried it out through an ampeg 8x10 classic and it sounds awesome!!! Dont think ill need more for a while. Next stop will probably be the abm900 or klystron... so as for now im thinking of pushing two gk neo 410 with the mag400. That and changing the carpet for lime green tolex, the plastic corners for chrome ones, two cream leather handles and different color knobs ( as funky as i can make it look).

My wee beasty, for sale if anyone in the UK is interested

I emailed Ashdown FOUR times asking that.. NO RESPONSE.. I even emailed one fella directly who had always been helpful in the past...

so.... I havent bought one.
any other time theyve been extremely informative and helpful, but for some reason dont wanna supply the audio specs for the 610.

Hey man - I meant to post this a week ago but forgot, others may like to know this too. I emailed Ashdown just out of interest in regards to my ABM 610 and Guy Morel replied in a day...

"Hi Jake,

The 610 is a 4 ohm cab with a frequency range of 50Hz to 5kHz...
I'm afraid I do not have SPL figures..

Regards,
Guy"

And while I'm here...

thanks JC!! ... im gonna write it up to perhaps whoever got my emails put in on the "gotta check about this" list, and just forgot... cos EVERY other time Ive gotten responses in less than 24 hours as well...

thanks for the tip!

However I am contemplating the ABM 115 compact to put under my 410 for bigger stages and just the 115 for those smaller gigs. Does anyone have one of those cabs??

The ABM115 is a great cab, but I feel it's a little too quiet and there isn't quite the punch for me. If I had the transportation, stage space and felt cocky, I'd use it on my gigs. But for now I'll stick with the smaller, more manoeuvrable ABM810...

This is the best amp I have ever tryed. I own a abm 500 EVO II and a abm 410T cab. I use it in rehearsels and gigs and just to practise at home.

For now it is basically all I need but I have the feeling that in a couple of months I might just get myself a new more powerful Ashdown amp and bigger cabs

Looks great but I am not settled on what to get yet. There is the 550 Spyder that looks and sounds great

I am still looking to find THE Ashdown Amp

Yes, you're right: The 550 Spyder is also very interesting..! Actually for me it was a choice between the Klystron 1000 and the 550 Spyder when I bought THE Ashdown amp recently. For me the choice was the Klystron, but I fully understand if you choose the Spyder to get the valve front end.
