I learnt cello since the age of 7, so by the time I picked up a bass it was pretty easy for me to transfer the reading ability I had on cello to bass. So yes, I can read. As for weather it's important, I think it depends what you do. For the last 5 years or so I've been involved in larger jazz...

thanks for your comments guys, can I just add at this point that it was not actually pete who suggested we name the band after him, it was our pianist. I've spoken to pete and he says he doesn't mind what we call it :P some of us just think the pete werner quintet has a nice ring to it :)

Hi everyone, I've recently started university and joined a new jazz band. It's a quintet with sax, trombone, piano, drums and of course myself on bass. Practices are going great and we've already played a couple of gigs, however we've ran into a little bump in the road when it came to naming...

I have the fender Mike Dirnt signature P bass, and I love it, It has the classic tele look about it and is actually cheaper then most non signature P's :)

Naah, there's no way we're replacing them, they're both great guys and fantastic musicians, just a little forgetful on occasion :P

Ok, so I play in a jazz band, we play gigs fairly regularly and practice about once a week. Now we had scheduled a practice for tonight to play through a few new charts and prepare for our next gig next week. So most of the band arrive and set up, however we are without our tenor sax player and...

In the middle of set with my jazz band at a dinner, we'd just played "Milestones" (which as anyone who's into jazz probably knows, has a fairly quick bassline). A random guy from the crowd just stands up from his table, comes over taps me on the shoulder and says "Nice bass playing!" That's it...

If it's value for money you want go for the squier, if you want a quality instrument, the fender is the way to go

main instrument is the cello, closely followed by bass. I also play around with keyboard, uke, mandolin, 6 string (electric and acoustic), and double bass.
