Double Bass What kind of comping do you prefer?

Am I the first one NOT being happy with Freddy Green comping and (too many) roots? Of course it's nice to have roots going on when it's bossa or samba, and for other grooves: figure out what is essential to keep that groove going without the bass, in a way that you don't take over the...

Double Bass Bass solos at burning tempos

The suggestion of working from quarter note rhythms was already mentioned. I try to do that most of the time and make them sound like straight eighths. I got the idea from Larry Grenadier playing It's alright with me on "Art of the trio 2" By Brad Mehldau. He's most of the time doing these...

Double Bass broken windig Pirastro Oliv

I got both strings within a few days! So very good service from Pirastro! I went to my Luthier to set them up with a few adjustments so the any possible friction in the string is gone, hopefully it'll help.

Double Bass broken windig Pirastro Oliv

I sent an email to Pirastro and they offered me a free of charge D and G string if I send them the broken ones. Quick reply and in my opinion the right way to handle this.

Double Bass broken windig Pirastro Oliv

The g string broke in the area around the low b. The D string a bit higher up, around, the f. So it is kind of in the same place. As I said only the winding, not the core. Olaf

Double Bass broken windig Pirastro Oliv

Hi, I switched to Pirastro Oliv (D and G) in Oktober last year. Really happy about the sound and feeling of the strings. However the windig of my D string broke after a couple of months. I thought: ok bad luck, new string. Last week the winding of my G string broke too!! I'm a bit p.... off...

    Double Bass Pirastro Obligato

I use em for quite a while now, but indeed , they don't last very long. I don't mind the "roll" though. I do like the sustain, but I miss some punch. Never had the weak G problem though. Maybe that's also a matter of bass/ string combination?

    melodies on basguitar

Thnx for the Mark Egan tip! which songs do you think are the best to try out? (I only have one cd with him as a sideman, need to check more, I like his playing)

    melodies on basguitar

The thing is that I'd like to give my students some nice and inspiring examples of bassguitarists playing the melody, on a level they can connect to. This will help them to develop a better idea of the possibilities of the instrument and the difference between playing a melody and playing a...

    melodies on basguitar

Hi, I'm looking for recordings of melodies played on bassguitar. No fast stuff, just good melodies of at least a few bars long (like "A remark you made" by weather report)

Double Bass Your favorite jazz bass solos

some pretty amazing jazz bass solo is the full length recording of Dave Holland "One's All". I saw him doing a live show on german tv at "Jazz Baltica" whole concert just bass. He pulls off a nice program with both up tempo high energy stuff and ballads and so on, very complete! well arranged...

Double Bass Easy bass solo transcription ideas?

there is a great bass solo of Red Mitchell on ornithology (=how high the moon): not too fast, very melodic, very jazzlanguage and clear (sound of recording) It's on an album under his name called "jam for your bread". (there is a transcription on my site [Invalid or Expired Link Removed])...

    Double Bass walking bass

I think practicing your technique in the right way will help a lot. Try the 2 books of Hein van de Geyn "comprhensive bass method". Very very good exercises. (the setup of the book seems a biet messy, but if you work carefully it'll help a lot

Double Bass Modern Sounding Ballads for Pizz...

To me it seems that, although I agree to the point Ed made, that pocketgroove knows what he doesn't like about the way he plays a ballad. In that case I would actually recommend listening to those recordings of which you go "wow". It's inspiring and at least you will go into a direction you like...
