I think eBay always worked like that... you only reach your max bid if someone else's bidding pushes you to it... but no matter what, someone (or their software) could still come and snipe you at the last second provided their max bid is greater than all others'. Then again I haven't actually...

A common thread I see in band crisis stories here is "so and so is such a nice guy but he sucks at keys/drums/guitar"... it's a tough position to be in for sure, but is it worse than an excellent player who's an awful person?
