I had a Japanese Charvel bass similar to the 850xl the OP is looking at. One difference compared to a similar PJ Fender style bass is the Charvel has a reverse P pickup (treble coil closer to the neck).

I agree, his recording tone does sound more like a P Bass. Songs like Charlotte Sometimes and Play for Today come to mind. I know he used to play a black P Bass live in the early days and later (mid 80's) a MM Stingray. Maybe he plays a T Bird live these days because it looks cool???

An effect could be useful inside your bass if it's something you're going to be tweaking on the fly so you're not having to bend down and reach for the knobs on your pedal. I'd want a built-in envelope filter with controls for sensitivity, resonance, and maybe an LFO like a synth.

It's a single coil under the cover. I got a good look when it was in my parts drawer for many years.

So where would that flatten out to the standard 9" radius, around the 9th - 10th fret ? My math is a little rusty.

My friend has a blonde one from the 70's with a Dimarzio pickup in it. Even with the replacement PU, it sounds just like you describe. A Wooly lead fart.

The opamp on the pre looks like it says LM 358N, but it's hard to make out in the photo. You may want to research that exact opamp (whatever it is) and see if it came stock on any onboard preamps. Just a thought.
