sadly there are a lot of "bassists" that are failed guitarists. and it's these so-called bassists that people get their generalized negative views from. Don't like being called a failed guitarist? Then stop running your mouth and start showing people what a real bassist is capable of!

I would also suggest a metronome, start slow and steadily increase the tempo as you feel comfortable. It's kind of a boring thing to practice, but the results are well worth it.

I played in a punk band called Stink Dot. Not sure if that counts as good or bad but at the time we loved it.

I would say try it both ways, then whatever you personally like better is the right way. Stay true to yourself and your own style.

Maybe bring both, tune the 4string to drop D and use the 5 string for the lower stuff. Just a thought.
