Double Bass "solo of your choice"?

This is probably a stupid question, but for the placement auditions at a music festival it says "a solo of your choice." Would this usually be open to show pieces, or does it imply a movement of a standard concerto or Bach suite of you choice?

Double Bass what happened to the gary karr camp?

Actually, the email you get on the website isn't the right one. I had that problem when I went last year. You have to contact [email protected]. I know they're already booked for this summer, but good luck next year. I may even try to go back.

Betsy Sokoup and Philip Alejo will be joining the bass section next year. Congrats to both of them!! I'm not sure of anyone else who got in though.

Any experience with Diana is a good experience. Also, does anybody know about when Texas Music Festival and/or Eastern Music Festival will send out results?

Just wondering what people are up to this summer. Did anyone hear back from Music Academy? I got waitlisted and am just wondering on my chances of actually going.

Double Bass Great Female Double Bassists

I saw her name come up once, but I think this thread is forgetting about Diana Gannett. She is an absolute beast of a player. I heard that one time in the middle of a recital she pinched a nerve in a finger and played an entire piece with 2 fingers and still amazed the crowd. Yung Chao Wei is...

    Double Bass Summer Festivals

The best summer festivals/camps vary depending on what you're looking for. There's Eastern Music Festival, Brevard, Aspen, Music Academy of the West, Roundtop, Texas Music Festival, Tanglewood (BUTI for highschoolers), Banff, Yellow Barn, Wabass, SIMF, Pacific, Verbier, Schleischwig-Holstien...

    Double Bass Stability While Standing

I've wanted to atleast try that endpin, but I feel like the idea of such a great mass of steel would take away so much sound.

    Double Bass NYSOS

New York String Orchestra Seminar Anybody know how many people usually audition? I've never auditioned yet because I hear its rediculously competitive (that and I'm a little turned off at the fact its durning christmas :p).

    Double Bass Stability While Standing

You should be able to stand perfectly straight with the bass, as if you were just standing normally. The spine should be straight and perpendicular to the floor. There should be no strain on the spine. The reason it is better to listen behind the bass is that with your head in front of the...

    Double Bass Stability While Standing

True that the bass resonates more, but the second half sounds a little backwards. At least for me, it is much easier to hear when your head is back and behind the neck of the bass. Every teacher I've studied with, Diana Gannett and Gary Karr especially, would say to keep the head back so you...

    Double Bass vomit?

craig is 100% right, except he left out super vomit :D. the main focus of vomit is the right arm. as gary says, "every note has its own speed limit" and this is what vomit is all about. on the shift up, the bow does not chang to the speed of the highest note untill it finally reaches that...

    Double Bass Summer 09

SIMF was ok, but the lessons with Ranaan Meyer were sweet. Karr Kamp is incredible so far. I would highly recommend coming here at some point during your bass life.

Double Bass solo and duet ideas

I'm just brainstorming for future recitals and was trying to get others input on repertoire. Does anybody know of any good solos or duets that are not that well known for the bass? They can be originally for bass or a reasonable transcription. Any difficulty is fine. Thanks.
