Hi folks, The earliest versions of the DB 680 did indeed have only 4 tubes. The layout change and additional tube occurred in the mid-1996. Based on what I remember, I believe that the serial number of any 4 tube version would be under 100. Hope this is helpful! Best, Dave B.

The slight pop is the sound of switch for the fan when it turns on for the first time. It's normal and won't come through the direct out. Hope that helps clarify. Dave B.
