HELP! Someone is trying to mic my cab tonight!

Same hear, I have been screwed over by house di boxes, house mics, now either way, they get what I sound like. Though I will say, with a Crest CA9 and a 2x15 rig, I don’t always need the house’s help.

Lifelong finger style player-how get a heavy pick sound?

Lifelong finger style player here, and my thumb is partially paralyzed, I can’t pinch things for long…. Been accused of sounding like Geddy, though I am not a Rush fan….. Even before the paralysis I had a strong finger “pop” off the string, and learned to hold my index finger between my thumb...

How many rigs are you actively using, what are they?

Always the same pedals/pre and power, but the cab choice is venue specific. I have 5 cabinets, an EV/Eminence 2x10, 2-1x15’s loaded with Eminence Kappalites, and 2 with EVM 15b’s. Mix and match. All runs off a Crest CA9, soon to be a Crest Prolite 5.0

    Question regarding CA9

You do not need to bridge a CA9, the thing is practically bottomless. Why it weighs so much, it’s packed with gravity and spits it out in bass.

    Old EVB 15" bass speakers....

Got a pair in ‘84, served me well until now, Good friends.

    Old EVB 15" bass speakers....

The EVM’s did not have the excusion the newer drivers have, only 3.3mm v 6.7 for the Eminence. DO NOT GET THE LF’s, they sound mushy, and are not efficient, power suckers. But the std Kappa has that upper mid bite like an EV, and are very responsive to eq’ing.

    Old EVB 15" bass speakers....

Check my profile pic, all EVM, until 2 months ago. Replaced with Eminence Kappalite 3015, all I had to do was shorten the port by half. But they will still work fine in a TL606 cabinet. 3.2 cu.ft, 24 sq.in port 4” length. Gained an octave in low end, lost nothing in tone, lost 10 lbs per...

Relevance of Graphic EQ's on Amps Today?

I am a GEQ junkie. Must have, but I have cutdown to a 2x15 band, not so much for tone, that’s what the preamp is for. The GEQ is for the stage. I DI out of the preamp for the house, then control my stage eq and volume for my drummer and myself. Stages are wonky, some suck bass, others boost it...

Why no frequency response plots for bass cabs?

I poured over so many tech sheets, but then would find and play through what I read about, so I leaned what sound that graph made. I learned how to correlate what I saw, to what I should expect to hear. I EQ a room by ear, but use a RTA to verify. I calibrated myself to an extent. Years ago when...

    You and “your” sound

I'm gonna go with a plurality, it is a combination of ergonomics, electronics, techniques, wires and woods. "My" Sound starts with roundwound strings, goes to my fingerstyle over the pickup, then to a punchy maple-y wood toned bass, then to a fat, but mid lo-cut with growl eq, then out of a huge...

What Is The Best Amp You Ever Owned?

Basically my same experience with the CA9. I run a BBE383 or my Sansamp RPM in to an EV215 eq, and up to 4 EVM 15"s and 2x10"s , in any combo depending on size of gig. Waiting for a class D head that can come close to it

The Bass You Wanted to Like

For my 50th birthday, I ordered a custom Torzal from Jerome Little. Thru-neck, maple and walnut and zebrano. Nordtrand pups and pre. Custom nut and bridge widths.Waited 18 months for it. $$$$ So stoked finally get it, some of the most beautiful wood work I have ever seen, I would easily compare...

What made you pick up Bass?

We always had music around the house, though my folks were never players. Mom was in to classical, Dad was a country man. Grew up watching Top o' Pops, mesmerized by the glam bands, having a blast playing music for cute girls in crazy costumes. I wanted that! Always had a knack for picking out...

    AI Live Mixing?

Phase inversion, submix the drums to 2 channels, run those through a phase-inverter, as you turn up the slider, you turn down the drums.
