DJ5 pickups? What have folks tried?

What's good Talkbass, I picked up a Lakland DJ5 here on Talkbass, it's been slamming, came with a John East Pre and everything. The one thing about it I don't like is that it's got Bartolini Pres on it, some Musicman-style cats. My first 5 string was a Ibanez SR5 and it had Bartolini's on it...

Honest, knowledgeable Amp Repair in LA/OC?

Hey Guys, I live in Long Beach, California, and i've got a GK 1001rb that has some powering issues...my usual mechanic down the street says it has to be with the power unit, it was blowing the tweeter on my old GK cab and now it just doesn't do high frequencies very well. Anyway, my guy is...

Cheapest Way to Get Speakers Reconned?

Hey Bass Brothas, I bought a 410 GK RBH used a couple of years ago, and I've found the speakers to be lacking in some definition recently. I've also had a few unfortunate situations where I've been playing and lost 50-60 percent volume out of nowhere, and gotten a distorted, emaciated tone...

What's people's "money" gauge for flatwounds for their preferred brand?

Thanks guys for the responses...I've never bought strings individually, probably out of fear I'd mismatch the gauges and end up with a warped all around action string to string...may have to give it a try this time...should I buy the E and the A? Marial I think the 105 Sunbeams are money in...

What's people's "money" gauge for flatwounds for their preferred brand?

Hey bass brothas, First of all, thanks for taking the time to answer this question, I always get great advice here. My question is: what are folks preferred string gauge for flatwounds? I know some cats like their string stiff, others with more bounce, etc. I'd like to see what people...

Strong fundamental but not dull and thuddy

Might have to give the Pressures a try...I went with the Precision Flats just to give Flats a real concerted effort...and they feel good, I feel like I may have gone with too low a gauge though, 95-45. Have the Pressures changed in character over the few months? Less/more zing, more/less thuddy?

    Best Gauge for La Bellas?

This is funny, I was thinking about posting something along the lines of this post, I'm in a similar position. Definitely need some low-tension flats, still with great low-end warmth and clarity. Tried Chromes a while back at the 100-I can't remember gauge, and felt the strings were a bit too...

Strong fundamental but not dull and thuddy

I tried them at home...the Chromes I did a diservice though, I tried them on, and took them off after like a couple of hours, reason being I had a gig that night and didn't want the change of feel to affect my playing too much...The 77s I can't really remember if I played that many gigs with...

Strong fundamental but not dull and thuddy

Hey ToneMonkey...what gauge are you playing? How's the tension? I've heard they are really high tension at 105...thinking about going with a 102 or maybe even 95....

Strong fundamental but not dull and thuddy

I'm in a similar situation, although I'm really considering trying flats again, or half-rounds. I've tried Roto77s and Chromes and didn't really dig the feel or the tone of the strings. Didn't have the sustain or definition of roundwoods, at least on my P-Bass. So far, my favorite string for a...

Half round / ground wound for five string

D'Addario Half Rounds, at least the 4-string set, were ULTRA stiff to me...felt like I was fighting the bass when I had them on.

    Rotosound Jazz Bass 77 review

I recall playing these and feeling like they didn't have enough sustain for me on my P-Bass..After reading this I feel I should probably give them another try....

    The Land of Low-Tension Strings

To give yall an idea of what type of tone/playing style I'm working on for this particular record, I got one track that has a Muse-ish 16-note riff going on with heavy distortion (just started using a Swollen Pickle, this baby is boss!)...

    The Land of Low-Tension Strings

Hmmm...tried Dunlops after a bro at GC recommended them, and HATED them! I think I had the stainless steel guys though... MM-Bongo I'm jamming on the Fat Beams right now...they feel okay. Higher tension though than the Sunbeams...granted they've been on for less than an hour total play-time...
