1985 Ibanez Roadstar RB650 or brand new Sire Marcus Miller P7?

It's all on you brother. I'm a firm believer in the "you gotta play it first" school of thought. I will tell you this: As a 56 year old who's been playing bass for 45 years, I've had many basses pass through my hands. I never would have thought that, after owning and playing some seriously high...

How to fix dry looking Pau Ferro?

Been using Old English Lemon Oil for decades with no ill effects. Conditions the wood nicely and has a bit of petroleum distillates that do a great job of cleaning the schmutz.

    Vintage bass quandry

I would leave as is, as long as it plays great. That's a unique instrument and, while it's not a vintage fender, will increase in value - and more so if unaltered. Old wear is authentic, it tells a story of it's life. It would be a shame to delete that history.

    Gear snobs.

I recently was refused to even hold a fellow bass player's prized Alembic. He proceeded to play his set - the musical equivalent of a fat man walking across a hot gravel lot in his bare feet....

Which bass better cut trough a mix?

I gotta say that most basses, when EQed, will stand out well. However, some are inherently better than others. My Sadowsky Metro, American Elite P and Spector Euro 4LX all speak with authority in the mix. However, my current go-to are my 80s Peavey Foundations. Amazing presence in the mix...

What comes first, the amp or the gig?

I have a Rumble 100 combo as well as a Rumble 500 head. I run the head into one or two GK Neo 15s. You could probably find the head used for cheap (I paid $200) and match it to the cab(s) of your choice. Regarding your band mate complaining of the 100 being boomy, I agree. I tamed mine by...

Uber bassists- I don't get it.

I saw Claypool a few years back and Stanley Clarke last week. The audience at both were filled with adoring fans who ate up every frenetic note. I however was left cold and unmoved. So no, you're not the only one.

Are higher priced Fenders really worth it?

My opinion is thus: Owning both an American Elite Precision as well as a Squier Classic Vibe Precision allows me the opportunity to scrutinize each end of the spectrum. In a nutshell, the Classic Vibe has noticeably better fit, finish and attention to detail in it's build quality. It's hardware...
