    Bass guitar recommendations under $500

I’ll throw my vote in for Squier CV instruments made in Indonesia. The Samick and Cort-built Squiers I have seen recently are very well-constructed instruments and, surprisingly, the pickups, while not being top of the line, do not suck. I always upgrade tuners, bridges, and controls, but, to...

Double Bass Best pickup when no bridge adjusters

The Ehrlund EAP is a fantastic pickup, but it requires absolutely precise locating to get it to sound its best, plus, it is rather pricey. Of late, I have gotten very good response from the $99 KNA DB-1 wing slot pickup. It’s very easy to install (KNA supplies shims to get a tight fit) and...

MXR M81, worth the money? Anything better?

Sorry for the delay. I’ve been offline for a while. Yes, the MXR M81 CAN be operated with phantom power and can be used as a DI - with the optional benefit of having tone controls if you need to use them. It’s a terrific unit and certainly a “best bang for the buck”. I consider it to be a Swiss...

Double Bass Euphonic Audio is no mas.

The Wizzy10 driver was designed for the Wizzy10 speaker. According to Euphonic Audio, ALL their speakers are transmission line designs of one kind or another. The Wizzy12M had two paths of lines whereas the Wizzy10 and Wizzy12 had only one transmission line. Admittedly, EA’s lines are shorter...

Double Bass Euphonic Audio is no mas.

For what it’s worth, Gollihur Music still has a few Wizzy10 speaker drivers left. They have neodymium magnets, are designed to operate in EA cabinets, and, if you swap them out for the existing drivers in your cabinet(s), will reduce the weight considerably. I have done this to EA CXL110...

Need help properly amplifying my upright and electric

Another approach: If you find an amplifier with an effects loop that sounds great with your electric bass, you could use an outboard preamp like a MXR M81 Bass Preamp, which is quite transparent, for your upright bass by simply plugging the output of the preamp into the RETURN jack on the...

EA Doubler high eq issue? (electric bass)

That does not sound right to me. I have a Doubler Mk II in front of me and, while the controls are subtle, there is no “muffling” at all due to the Treble control. Usually Euphonic Audio preamp circuits are bulletproof, but I wonder if you might have a problem with your unit. if so, Gary...

EA Doubler high eq issue? (electric bass)

As far as I know, the Treble control on the Doubler MkII is set at 4kHz, shelving. The AI Treble control was set much higher at 10kHz, also shelving. AI offered 15 dB of boost or cut while EA offered 12 dB.

EA Euphonic Audio Club (NEW WEBSITE)

I know it’s not the same, but Gollihur Music still has Wizzy10 drivers for sale. Replacing a CXL110 speaker driver with a Wizzy10 driver is a simple job. I just did that on a CXL110 last week. Before and after pics:

    Double Bass Henriksen Amp Question

EQ bypass switch - so you can compare your “raw” tone with your EQ’d tone with the push of a button.

    For Sale/Trade Euphonic Audio VL-210 x 2 w/ Vinyl Cover

Those are VL210s, not NL210s. Higher fidelity but much heavier than the NLs. Great speakers, just not the ones listed in the heading.

    EA CXL 112E replacement driver

Neodymium drivers in a CXL cabinet? Those must have been changed at some point in time. Dual-driver CXL cabinets always used a coaxial speaker driver and a second woofer. By changing the drivers to neodymium ones, your cabinet is more like an EA NL210 than a CXL210. That means that the 102dB...

    EA CXL 112E replacement driver

The Beyma driver you mention has good specifications for mounting in your CXL cabinet, but its sensitivity, at 94.6dB, seems to be a bit low. I don’t know what the sensitivity of the CXL210 is, but if it is much higher than that of the Beyma, the CXL/Beyma cabinet might not put out the same...

    EA CXL 112E replacement driver

Another choice is the Eminence KappaLITE 3012LF, which I have installed in a Wizzy12 M-Line cabinet before. It is limited on the top end to about 2kHz, but if you just want low-end extension, it does very well. It’s light, having a neodymium magnet, and has an 8-ohm voice coil, so you can use it...
