I have always liked Mike, been a fan from VH's first record... he isn't a Billy Sheehan type guy, but he never pretended to be, he was playing a more 'classic' role on bass, in line with his influences (Jack Bruce, etc)... and that was fine, Eddie supplied the fretboard pyrotechnics and Mike did...

As an earlier poster said, often it is simply a case that the SVT/810 is rented out by local gear companies. That rig probably gets a booking almost every night of the week. Also, a lot of gear shops are run/owned/staffed by crusty old roadie types, and they love to see a fridge in the backline.

Makes you wonder why we all spend gazillions on gear, when most of the people listening can barely pick out what the bass is doing among every other noise of a song. Me: 'So, what did you think... did the bass sound OK?' Audience member: 'Um, I dunno... I couldn't really tell... the drummer...

I guess I should add, I wasn't talking about MY bass sound... I was referring to the sound of whoever was playing the stuff i was digging at the time...

I guess I should add that my post wasn't so much about the desire to improve technically, or get better gear... it was really just a sorry assed lament that I can still remember a time when I'd hone in on what the bass was doing on a record and just soak it in and love it for the melody, timing...

I gots to thinking the other day, of a more innocent time... when thoughts of '...what amp is that?' and '...hey, are they roundwounds?' wouldn't cloud the pure enjoyment of what the bass was actually doing in a song... I admit to sometimes looking at my rig (the latest one), my collection of...

A little while ago I got myself a MarkBass 210 combo and am very happy, especially with the portability of the thing (having previously run with an Ampeg SVT3 Pro head and 410HLF cab... nice sound, but a bitch to carry up several flights of stairs). I love the combo, but want to have another...

The Sterling will have 'Sterling' written on the headstock... while the Musicman will have 'Musicman' written on the headstock... :smug: The neck on the MM is wider near the headstock, and the neck slightly thicker. I switched from Stingray to Sterling because the neck feels easier to play...

the Ampeg 4 x 10 is horn loaded (the 410HLF) but yes, it is known to be bassy...
