sound of E string on a 5string bass

Could the difference possibly be in the pickup pole pieces? On a five string, I wonder if the pole pieces under the B and A strings affect the E, whereas on a 4-string, only the E and A pole pieces have a magnetic pull. The magnetic fields might not be large enough for this to make a...

Silk Purse from a Sow's Ear, or The Squier-itter Bronc-ora

If Jack the Ripper made basses...he'd be jealous of your talent. Very nice work!

Frets. Do you hammer or press?

You might've misunderstood the question. I hammer frets for all the same reasons as mentioned above. I had a great opportunity to see Frank Ford doing a re-fret, and he also uses a hammer.

Wood p@rn - why do we bother?

+1000 Nothing pisses me of more than a waste of nice wood. It upsets me when I see an instrument that is basically a scrap-heap of expensive wood. Likewise, a poor quality painted instrument is about as rare as rain in Seattle.

    Build number 4

Rob, I did a fairly thorough search on TB before posting my last entry, and this was the video I found that inspired me the most. After looking a little bit more this morning (at the shop again today), I think I will go for that method. It looks difficult to master, but I will practice on...

    Build number 4

Full pics will be coming soon. By the time I get my laptop fixed (or a new one...or get back to Omaha to my desktop), this thing will be finished and strung up! A question or two about the finish... I have decided on doing a hand-rubbed finish, something like Tung Oil or similar. I would...

Unfortunately, my computer has figuratively exploded, so I will not be able to post sound clips or pictures of the new knobs for quite a while. Sorry to get your hopes up. (this post courtesy of R-V library)

    Roberto-Venn: The Dream Starts...

P, I'm really glad you got pictures of Frank Ford's visit. It was so amazing having him in the shop. I don't think I will ever meet anyone with as much knowledge or experience in the world of acoustic guitar repair. He is such an inspiration. Your acoustic is lookin good, btw!!
