If you're just using it to practice, look at buying a head as it saves so much space. Something like the TC BH250 is tiny and has a headphone jack, and if you find you do need a speaker, just get a cab to go with it. Together they shouldn't cost more than £600 depending on brands.

Have you polished the pickguard? My physics is terrible, so don't expect a great explanation, but there's something to do with static electricity getting picked up. I can't say for sure if this is the problem, but it should clear after an hour or so of playing if it is. Just something to check...
